According to initial information, on April 1, Timisoara City Hospital took blood samples from 49 mothers and all newborns at the Obstetrics Department and performed tests on April 5 and 6. Of the 11 children infected with SARS-CoV-2, 10 were discharged from the hospital with their mothers on April 2-4.

The hospital's maternity ward was quarantined after 12 medical staff tested positive for Covid-19. It is therefore likely that the 11 newborns were infected with the virus by nurses and medical staff at the ward. The newborns are scheduled to be admitted to another hospital in the same city that is treating Covid-19 patients.

After the incident, Romanian Health Minister Nelu Tataru on April 6 asked local public health authorities to launch an urgent epidemiological investigation at the hospital and quarantine discharged patients./.
