On January 1, 2016, Thanh went to Vinh city and asked an acquaintance to help him buy heroin. Through the acquaintance, Thanh bought heroin and hid it in a cigarette pack before taking it to Ha Tinh. While waiting to catch a bus home, he encountered a working group from the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department of Nghe An Province Police coming to inspect. Thanh threw the package of drugs on the ground and was caught red-handed, arrested and had a record of the crime made.
The results of the examination showed that the drugs seized from Thanh were heroin weighing 36.79 grams and 0.31 grams of methamphetamine (crystal meth). Nguyen Thi Hoai Thanh was prosecuted for illegal drug trafficking.
At the trial, Nguyen Thi Hoai Thanh admitted to the crime as stated in the indictment and hoped to receive leniency from the law.
Thanh's behavior was considered a case of dangerous recidivism (in 2000, Thanh was sentenced by the People's Court of Ha Tinh province to 5 years in prison for illegal drug trafficking; in 2005, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison for this crime and had just completed serving his prison sentence on April 14, 2015), and needed to be strictly handled. However, considering the defendant's honest confession, repentance, and family's contributions to the revolution, the panel sentenced the defendant to 13 years in prison.
