Blue light from phones disrupts sleep

Blue light reduces sleep quality, causes poor mental health, and disrupts the body's biological clock if people are exposed to it for too long at night.

Neuroscientist Stuart Peirson from the University of Oxford said that in the human body, the cells in the eye are called Intrinsic Photoreceptor Cells (ipRGCs), which are linked to the brain and body. IpRGCs are most sensitive to blue light wavelengths, emitted from devices such as phones, tablets or LED lights.

Exposure to blue light can disrupt the body's biological clock, leading to poor sleep quality and poor physical and mental health.

“This can cause changes in mood, which can lead to changes in behaviour, such as irregular eating and sleeping,” says Dr Stuart Peirson, according toABC News.

However, blue light is very good in the morning. People can feel it naturally from the sun.

In fact, blue light or artificial light has been used to treat SAD for a long time. It is a standard treatment and has been shown to be effective. People with mental health problems should expose themselves to blue light in the morning and limit it at night, allowing the body to reset its natural rhythm, improving sleep and mood.

According to a report by the Royal Society Te Apārangi, a NZ science advocacy organization, many people mistakenly believe that blue light is only harmful to eye health, but in fact it is not. There is no evidence to show a link between blue light and the retina, or even macular degeneration. People should be more worried about ultraviolet light, which is one of the main causes of blindness.

Scientists say that we should dim lights and use mobile devices and tablets at night, and replace white light bulbs with warm colors such as yellow light bulbs for better health.
