Worried about choosing school and class before the 10th grade entrance exam

(Baonghean.vn) - Choosing a school and class is a concern for many parents before this year's 10th grade entrance exam. In reality, parents do not have many options when there are too few schools enrolling NV2 and NV3 students and the enrollment locations are not favorable for the majority of candidates.

Many hesitations

Two days before the Nghe An Department of Education and Training officially opened the registration system for 10th grade admission, Ms. Tran Thi Hang in Trung Do ward (Vinh city) still did not know which public school in Vinh city she would send her child to.

My child's academic performance is average, only getting 18-19 points in the mock exams. In the most recent exam organized by the City Department of Education and Training, he got more than 24 points. This shows that his performance is not stable, and his test results are not solid. He wants to take the exam to Huynh Thuc Khang High School, but my family wants to orient him to another school with a lower standard score to ensure a place in a public school. In addition, I also want to register him for NV2, NV3 at another public school, but it is really difficult, because in Vinh city there is no public school recruiting NV2.

Ms. Tran Thi Hang, Trung Do ward (Vinh city)

Nghe An has 90 high schools, of which 72 are public high schools. In Vinh city, in addition to special schools and specialized schools, the whole city has only 3 public schools: Huynh Thuc Khang High School, Ha Huy Tap High School and Le Viet Thuat High School. For the past 3 years, all of these schools have only recruited NV1 students, making it very difficult for parents to choose.

Student Nguyen Thanh Ngoc - class 9A - Nghi An Secondary School (Vinh city) has been an excellent student for 4 consecutive years of secondary school. This female student was also selected to participate in the city's English competition. However, in the upcoming exam, she said she will take the exam for Nguyen Duy Trinh High School (Nghi Loc) to easily pass the exam, avoiding competition with many other students in the city.

Our class has 45 students and only about 30% of students take the entrance exam to public schools or specialized schools in the city. The rest of the students choose to register for schools in neighboring districts such as Nghi Loc 3 High School, Nghi Loc 4 High School and Nguyen Duy Trinh High School. This will lead to certain disadvantages, but compared to the general level, students in the suburbs have many limitations in learning conditions, so it is difficult for them to compete with inner-city schools. To increase the chances of admission, I also hope that in the next exam, the Department needs to pay attention to the exam questions, how to make the questions close to the general ability of students in the whole province and have differentiation, ensuring the rights of students in all regions.

In fact, enrolling in non-public schools or some special schools with priority also makes many parents hesitate. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, whose child is studying in grade 9 at a school in the center of Vinh city, said that the homeroom teacher informed her about her child's academic results at school and the mid-term and final exam scores. With a total score of 3 subjects below 16 points, the child is classified as having difficulty passing the entrance exam to a public school. The school also suggested that parents of these children may not register for the entrance exam to grade 10 and submit an early application to a non-public school. Meanwhile, Ms. Tuyet's family still wants their child to try their hand at the entrance exam to grade 10.

Similarly, after the 9th grade parent class last weekend, Ms. Lan, whose child is studying at Vinh University's Primary, Secondary and High School for Pedagogical Practice, was also forced to face a difficult choice. Previously, according to the school's announcement, this was the first year the school enrolled 3 10th grade classes and reserved 50% of the priority quota for students studying at the school's secondary school level. The condition for studying is that after the admission results are available, the student will enroll and commit not to apply to transfer to another school.

That means students do not have the opportunity to study at other public schools or specialized schools even if they are admitted.

Speaking more about this, Ms. Lan said: If children study at a teacher training school, they will no longer have the pressure of admission at the beginning of the year. However, after 9 years of general education, my child and I still want to be challenged in the 10th grade exam and have more opportunities. The school's decision to issue this regulation puts many parents in a "difficult" position.

Not many options

Con Cuong High School is one of two public schools in Con Cuong district. In recent years, due to low enrollment, the school's entrance score has been quite low, even below average in some years. Currently, although there are many opportunities to recruit better quality candidates in other areas, Con Cuong High School only recruits candidates who register for NV1.

Although the number of 9th grade students in Con Cuong district this year has increased compared to the previous school year, it is predicted that there will be quite a few students who are not registered for the high school entrance exam. Therefore, to ensure enough students, we will give priority to candidates who register for NV1 and mainly students in the area. If recruiting NV2, students from other localities can register, but the stability is not high. It is possible that after one or two years of study, some students will transfer schools or drop out, affecting the number of students in the whole school.

In the whole Nghe An province, according to the announcement of the Department of Education and Training, this year, out of more than 100 public and non-public high schools, Continuing Education - Vocational Education centers in the province, there are 44 units enrolling students to register for admission according to NV2 and NV3. However, the number of public schools enrolling NV2 can be counted on the fingers with only 6 schools, namely Yen Thanh 2 High School, Yen Thanh 3 High School, Ky Son High School, Que Phong High School, Anh Son 2 High School and Cat Ngan High School (Thanh Chuong).

These are all schools located in mountainous areas or in difficult areas, with limited enrollment sources. NV2 enrollment will theoretically increase the opportunity for schools to recruit more students with quality input. However, in reality, this is unlikely to happen because the area is too far from the center, so the number of students from other areas who will register for NV2 is not much. On the parents' side, many people want to register more wishes for their children, but with this geographical distance, this is not feasible.

Because there are not many opportunities to choose, the thing that parents worry about the most in this year's 10th grade exam is that the benchmark score will increase, especially in the context of the number of students taking the 10th grade exam this year increasing dramatically. This is also the prediction of many schools, especially in schools with high competition rates.

This year, although Quynh Luu district has increased by more than 600 students, our school only enrolls 630 students in 14 classes and only increases the quota by 14 compared to the previous school year. With this reality, I think that if the exam remains stable as in previous years, the benchmark score will increase.

Teacher Ho Sy Nam Thang - Principal of Quynh Luu 1 High School

Previously, in the previous school year, the benchmark scores for grade 10 increased across the province. For example, Quynh Luu 1 High School increased by 4 points, many schools in Dien Chau district increased by 3-6 points, and schools in Vinh city also increased by an average of 2-3 points. The continuous increase in benchmark scores over the years has put pressure on many students and schools, making the race to enter public grade 10 even more difficult. Regarding this year's exam, the Department of Education and Training has also announced the structure of the entrance exam for grade 10, with the view that the content of the exam must be within the scope of the Middle School program, mainly the grade 9 program issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.

In addition, the test must require four levels: recognition, understanding, application and high application, in which recognition and understanding account for 50 - 60% of the total score and application and high application: 40 - 50% of the total score.

A representative of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training also said that compared to last year, the exam questions remain stable. However, the exam questions will be more differentiated to differentiate candidates and also help schools make better selections. Immediately after issuing the exam structure, the Department also requested the Departments of Education and Training to base on the Department's admission documents and the exam structure to organize teaching and review to suit each group of students./.
