2 year old boy bitten by German Shepherd, losing eye
The neighbor's 40 kg dog, which had not been vaccinated against rabies, attacked the child, causing his eyeball to dislodge from its socket.
Doctor Do Thi Ngoc Linh, Deputy Head of the Department of Maxillofacial - Plastic - Cosmetic Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, said that the child was admitted to the hospital with a wound on the cheek and a fractured skull. The entire eyeball was dislocated from the eye socket, endangering the child's life.
Doctors performed emergency surgery, stitching up the baby’s scalp and cheek wounds. The medical team had to put the eyeball back into the baby’s eye socket, then use elastic bandages to protect the eye and keep the eyeball from dislocating. It is not yet possible to assess the baby’s vision after the accident.
The patient was vaccinated against rabies and transferred to the Central Eye Hospital for further monitoring and treatment.
Doctors recommend that families with dogs must vaccinate their pets against rabies and muzzle their dogs in public places. In particular, children should not be allowed to come into contact with dogs or cats.
