(Baonghean.vn) - With simple, rudimentary materials, fishermen in Dien Chau district (Nghe An) have used fishing lines to create rafts to ensure safety when catching seafood at sea.

Fishing with rafts has been a traditional occupation of fishermen in many communes of Dien Chau district for many generations, and still exists today. Mr. Chu Van Quang in hamlet 3 Thai Thinh, Dien Kim commune said that the rafts are made of various materials: 19 old bamboo trees, 65 foam sheets (1m x 50cm x 10cm), 10 wooden ladders, 2 stainless steel frames, 12 kg of fishing line... To ensure the raft is sturdy and can be used for a long time, the parts of the raft are completely tied together with fishing line like this, absolutely no nails are used to fasten it. Photo: Xuan Hoang

Although made from rudimentary materials, with the experience of fishermen, especially the elderly, the rafts are assembled appropriately and are quite sturdy enough to catch seafood. Photo: Xuan Hoang

The bottom of the raft is made of many evenly split meter bars, extending from end to end to hug 65 foam panels, so the raft is lightweight. Photo: Xuan Hoang

The machine used to install on rafts has a capacity of 20CV, so it can only fish close to shore. Fishermen said that rafts, because they use many foam panels, can carry over 2 tons of seafood. Photo: Xuan Hoang
On the raft there is a net winch. In the past, people used manual winches (left), but recently on the market there are hydraulic winches (right), many fishermen have invested in installing them to reduce labor. Photo: Xuan Hoang
According to fishermen, each raft is 7m long and more than 2m wide; the cost of materials to complete the raft is about 20 million VND, plus the engine and fishing gear, the total cost is about 50 million VND. However, the raft will be replaced after 4-5 years of use. Photo: Xuan Hoang

Currently, fishermen are still fishing by raft in Dien Chau, Quynh Luu districts, Hoang Mai town... but the most are still in Dien Chau district. Mr. Le The Hieu - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dien Chau district said: In the district, there are currently over 300 rafts in the communes: Dien Thanh, Dien Kim, Dien Hai. Currently, there are no regulations prohibiting fishing by raft, but the district does not encourage people to develop this profession, because this is a traditional profession of the people for many generations, so people still maintain it. Fishing close to shore, low cost, main products are herring, shrimp, jellyfish... so people often make a profit and have few risks. Photo: Xuan Hoang
