Mass fish deaths in Nghia Dan for unknown reasons
(Baonghean.vn) - Over the past few days, fish raised in ponds of some households in Hamlet 1, Nghia Yen Commune, Nghia Dan District have suddenly died en masse. Faced with this situation, the people have reported to the Nghia Yen Commune authorities and the functional agencies of Nghia Dan District to come down and inspect.
According to the people of Hamlet 1, this is the first time in the area that there has been a mass death of fish in ponds. It is known that for a long time, the water source for farming of the people here has been taken from Khe Canh dam.
After the water from Khe Canh dam flowed into the ditch, people let it flow straight into the fish pond as usual. However, on the afternoon of May 3, grass carp, bighead carp, and birds weighing 1-3 kg died in the pond, giving off a foul smell.
My family has been using water from Khe Canh dam for 10 years, but in recent days the water has become murky, fish are gasping and dying in large numbers. I have to use a net to scoop the fish up to avoid water pollution; in 2 days I have scooped up 200 kg of dead fish. My children used to bathe in this water comfortably and cleanly, but now when they go in, they feel itchy and have boils. I don't know why.

Not only Ms. Oanh's house, not far away, fish in Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa's pond in Hamlet 2, Nghia Yen Commune also died en masse. To avoid environmental pollution, Mr. Hoa's family rented a machine to drain the water and soak the pond to detoxify and disinfect.
Mr. Hoa added: "For a long time we have been drinking water from Khe Canh dam, but recently the water from the dam has turned black, and when it is released into the pond, all the grass carp, bighead carp, and silver carp have died; more than 100 kg of fish have been lost."

According to records at the scene, in the fish ponds of the people in hamlet 1, dead fish floated on the water surface, giving off a foul smell.
It is known that hamlets 1, 2 and 3 are the hamlets that directly use water from Khe Canh dam and have about 70 small and medium-sized fish ponds, of which 6 households in hamlets 1 and 2 were severely affected, with massive fish deaths.
Ms. Le Thi Thu - head of Hamlet 1, Nghia Yen Commune said: The water source here has never been foul or polluted, even in the hot summer. Therefore, she hopes that the authorities will soon inspect the scene to clarify the cause so that people can feel secure in their production and stabilize their lives./.
