At around 4:45 p.m. this afternoon (August 13), the area of Thinh Tam hamlet, Do Luong commune (formerly Thinh Son commune, Do Luong district), became much more noisy and bustling, when many neighbors, friends and relatives came to share joy with the family of Mr. Thai Khac Thanh - who was sentenced by the People's Court of Region 5, Hung Yen province, to 6 years in prison and an additional fine of 30 million VND for raising and selling 13 white pheasants - a speciesrare animalslisted in the Vietnam Red Book

Immediately after that, this case caused a stir in public opinion because of the 6-year prison sentence. Returning after 4 months of detention, Thai Khac Thanh could not hide his emotions. Thanh shared: "I was very happy and joyful to see my mother, wife, children and everyone again. I did not think that I would raise ornamental chickens and sell them for such a large sentence. I hope that the appeal court will review the circumstances and reduce the sentence so that I have a chance to start over."
Touched by the concern of his brothers and friends in his hometown, Mr. Thanh also did not forget to thank the online community, public opinion and the authorities for considering his release. Mr. Thanh also told everyone that when raising animals, they must carefully research the origin, source, and species, to avoid raising rare and precious animals and then encountering situations like himself.

Currently, according to the local authorities, although Mr. Thanh is allowed to return home, this is only a way to change the preventive measure from temporary detention to prohibition from leaving the place of residence pending the appeal trial. Therefore, Mr. Thanh has been instructed by the local authorities to go to the headquarters to complete the declaration procedure during the time of bail, awaiting the appeal trial.

Previously, on April 2, at DH07 Street in Song An Commune, Vu Thu District, former Thai Binh Province (now Hung Yen Province), the Police Department for Investigation of Economic Crimes, Corruption, Smuggling and Environment of Thai Binh Province Police coordinated with the Thai Binh Province Forest Protection Department to inspect and discovered a car with license plate 37K - 25841 transporting 10 animals suspected to be white pheasants in the IB list of endangered, precious and rare animals. After that, the investigation agency seized 3 more white pheasants, with the scientific name Lophura nycthemera, belonging to the bird class, order Fowl, family Pheasant, on the list of endangered, precious, and rare animals, at Mr. Thanh's house.
On August 8, after the investigation, at the first instance trial, the People's Court of Region 5, Hung Yen province sentenced Mr. Thai Khac Thanh to 6 years in prison and an additional fine of 30 million VND.
However, after receiving various feedbacks on social networks about the first instance trial of Mr. Thai Khac Thanh, the Chief Justice of the People's Court of Hung Yen province sent a document to the Chief Prosecutor of the People's Procuracy of Hung Yen province, requesting an appeal against the first instance criminal verdict in the case of "Violating regulations on the protection of endangered and rare animals" mentioned above.
