Recently, the villagers have "invented" a new way of cooking pots, building a furnace to retain heat.clay potMade from bricks, soil, steel, and laterite. The furnace is in the shape of an obtuse triangle, each side is 2-3 m long, 0.6-0.8 m high, and each corner has a door to light the fire. Photo: Huy Thu
The furnace wall is built of laterite, bricks and mud, with steel bars underneath to support the pot. Materials for building the furnace are easy to find and readily available, so the cost of building a furnace like this is not significant. Photo: Huy Thu
The kiln door is made of laterite, usually divided into two branches, each branch running to one side of the kiln. Thanks to that, when burning wood, the fire will burn evenly under the kiln body. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thao, residing in Hamlet 7, Tru Son Commune, is considered the pioneer in initiating this new technique in the pot village. According to Mr. Thao: "I found many disadvantages of burning pots in the old way, so I thought of this kiln and started to make it." Photo: Huy Thu
After drying, the clay pots are arranged in order in the kiln. Small pots can be placed inside large pots to save space in the kiln. Depending on the size, each kiln can burn from 300 to 500 pots of all kinds. Photo: Huy Thu
According to local people, compared to the previous "open kiln", burning masonry kilns has many advantages: saving materials such as straw, dry leaves, firewood...; keeping heat for a long time, reducing heat for people participating in the kiln burning, saving labor... Photo: Huy Thu
The time it takes to burn a batch of pots on a masonry kiln is also significantly shorter than before. When the clay pot glows red under the layer of coal, the pot is "done". Photo: Huy Thu
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thoan - a resident with experience in burning clay pots in hamlet 6, Tru Son commune said: Besides the advantages, the built-in kiln has the limitation of thick walls, which can hold fewer pots than the "bare kiln". Photo: Huy Thu
