(Baonghean.vn) - Farmers in Nghia Dan district are in the avocado harvest season and are quite happy because the avocado crop is good and the price is good.

Four years ago, after visiting the models, Ms. Tran Thi Nga in Phu Loc hamlet, Nghia Phu commune (Nghia Dan) decided to plantBooth avocadoand wax avocado intercropped with custard apple trees. Up to now, more than 100 Booth avocado and wax avocado trees of her family have grown quickly and produced high yields.

Ms. Nga said: “Booth avocado and wax avocado varieties are not picky about soil and are easy to grow, are less susceptible to pests and diseases, require low investment capital, and are suitable for local climate and soil conditions, so I decided to intercrop custard apple trees. Starting from the end of the second year to the third year, I can harvest large and even fruits.”

Ms. Nga added: “To grow avocado trees, you must first choose the right soil and avocado variety. Avocado trees adapt to many different types of soil, but the most suitable is still red soil. The place where avocados are planted must be well-drained; Transplanted trees will grow well, be resistant to pests and diseases, and yield high yields.

Once the tree has taken shape and is ready for harvest, it is necessary to regularly cut off weak branches and branches showing signs of pests and diseases. Small branches that bear a lot of fruit need to be supported because avocado branches are brittle and can easily break and fall.”

In agricultural development, Nghia Phu commune has planned more than 17 hectares of land to focus on growing fruit trees, including avocado trees. Up to now, the commune has expanded nearly 8 hectares, with farmers focusing on expanding the area and mainly intercropping with fruit trees such as custard apple, guava, etc., concentrated in central hamlets such as Phu Loc and Phu Hoa.

Mr. Ho Huu Hoai - Chairman of Nghia Phu Commune People's Committee said: "The locality determined that this is not only a model to help growers get more products, increase income on the same area, but also open up prospects for many farming households to get rich. Currently, the locality isreplicate the modelthis but not massively".

Mr. Hoang Thanh Hoai in Chong village, Nghia Yen commune, planted nearly 100 avocado trees of various types, of which 30 trees were harvested in the third year. With current prices, he earned an additional income of nearly 20 million VND. According to Mr. Hoai, avocado trees have few pests and diseases, so most of the avocados on Nghia Yen land are grown using natural methods to protect the ecological environment and the health of farmers, creating clean avocado products with high economic value.

With the soil quality as well as the selected varieties, the avocados here are even, shiny, yellow in color, chewy and fragrant, so consumers really like them.

Compared to the same crop last year, avocado prices are 10-20% higher at this time. After deducting costs, farmers earn a profit of 120-150 million VND per hectare.
