On October 11, the Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of Nguyen Trung Thanh (born in 1987, residing in Quan Hanh town, Nghi Loc district) for the crime of "Illegal possession of narcotics".
According to the indictment, because they knew each other before, in February 2018, when Lo Van Thon (residing in Chau Thon commune, Que Phong district) asked to borrow 375 million VND to buy a car. Thanh used the money he had saved to build a house to lend to Thon. A month later, when Thon did not pay the debt as promised, Thanh went to his house to collect the debt. Thon told Thanh to "temporarily hold" 1kg of crystal meth, and when Thon had the money, he would pay.
About 5 days later, Thanh returned to Thon’s house to collect the debt. This time, Thon continued to say he had no money to pay, so Thanh agreed to “take” 1 heroin cake, 20 packages of pink phien and 2 packages of crystal meth as “proof”. When he brought the drugs home, Thanh used up 1 package of pink phien, and hid the rest in the house.
On April 22, at the intersection of Quan Hanh town, Nguyen Trung Thanh was caught red-handed by Nghi Loc district police with 10 pink pills in his possession. After being arrested, Thanh voluntarily surrendered 1 heroin cake, 20 pink pills and 2 packages of crystal meth.
At the trial, Nguyen Trung Thanh stated that although he was addicted to drugs, he had no intention of trading these contrabands. Thanh kept the drugs to force Lo Van Thon to pay his debt. When arrested, Thanh actively helped Nghi Loc police solve a case. Thanh's family had contributed to the revolution, and the defendant himself showed remorse, repentance, and confessed honestly during the investigation and trial, so he was given many mitigating circumstances according to the law.
Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the People's Court sentenced Nguyen Trung Thanh to 20 years in prison.
