On the morning of February 19 (the 4th day of Tet), Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Xuan Duong inspected the agricultural production situation in Nam Dan and Hung Nguyen districts. Accompanying him were members of the Provincial Party Committee: Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Hoang Nghia Hieu - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; leaders of Nam Dan and Hung Nguyen districts.

In the 2018 Spring crop, the weather was very complicated, with prolonged cold spells, especially from January 29 to February 7, 2018, causing damage to 1,016.1 hectares of rice and seedlings.

The entire political system promptly intervened, guiding farmers to effectively overcome the damage caused by the cold.

In the 2018 Spring crop, regarding rice, the whole province sowed 2,298 hectares of seedlings, of which the area covered with nylon was 2,296.4 hectares, reaching 99.93%; sown and planted 87,938.9 hectares/plan of 90,000 hectares, reaching 99.71%, of which the area planted was 62,802.9 hectares; direct sowing 25,136 hectares.

Regarding peanuts, the total planted area is 6,200ha/plan 17,000ha, reaching 47.69%; corn planted area is 8,225ha/plan 17,000ha, reaching 58.10%; vegetables of all kinds have a total planted area of ​​201.2ha/plan 1,000ha, reaching 20.12%.

For Nam Dan district: In the 2018 Winter-Spring crop, the district had a total cultivated area of ​​11,500 hectares, of which the cultivated rice area was 6,864.2 hectares/plan of 6,700 hectares, reaching 102%. Due to the impact of prolonged cold weather, 457 hectares of cultivated rice were damaged by 30-70%.

Faced with that situation, the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has organized inspection teams and advised the communes. For the less affected areas, water should be pumped for people to soak and prune; for the more severely damaged areas, seedlings should be planted within the year, and transplanted after Tet to ensure timely harvest. For crops, Nam Dan has so far planted over 85% of the area, and the remaining areas will be directed to be closed immediately after Tet.

Through field inspection, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Xuan Duong highly appreciated Nam Dan and Hung Nguyen districts for actively directing people to overcome the damaged areas due to severe cold, farmers took drastic action; had experience, cared for production, proactively applied phosphorus, along with synthetic fertilizers to help rice plants withstand the cold. Field inspection showed that rice varieties had revived and developed.

The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested localities to direct farmers to plant crops such as spring corn, spring peanuts, and vegetables to ensure the area according to the plan of 2018. Focus on closely monitoring the situation of pests and diseases to proactively handle them; arrange to ensure irrigation water for crops. The weather is getting warmer, directing farmers to stay in the fields to focus on fertilizing, pruning, and weeding so that the rice plants can grow best from the beginning.

Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Xuan Duong noted that the agricultural sectors need to direct localities to focus on urgently launching production right from the first days of the year with the goal that the whole province is determined to achieve success in the 2018 Winter-Spring crop right from the first days, first months, and first crop.

In 2018, Nghe An Department of Agriculture and Rural Development set a number of key targets: Agricultural, forestry and fishery production value increased by 4.0 - 4.5%. Of which: Agriculture: 3.5%; Forestry: 6.0%; Fishery: 7.56%. Total grain output: 1,254,000 tons. Total weight of fresh meat sold: 230,000 tons. New concentrated forest planting: 17,000 ha. Timber exploitation (planted forests): 580,000 m³. Forest cover: 57.40%. Aquaculture output: 195,000 tons; Aquaculture area: 21,000 ha. General irrigation: 262,461 ha.
