Expert: Leaving open the possibility of Brazil joining NATO, the United States seeks to create a “global NATO”
The United States seeks to create a "global NATO" to ensure support for its policies at the global level, according to Pierre-Emmanuel Thomann, head of the Eurocontesy Center for Geopolitical Studies.

Speaking to Sputnik, he commented on the statement of US President Donald Trump, who suggested that there is a possibility that Brazil will receive NATO ally status.
The alliance's forms of cooperation with countries outside the North Atlantic region allow them to gain "partner" status, in Latin America the only example being Colombia.
“The United States has always sought to ensure that NATO is a global military-political bloc whose members support US policies and priorities globally,” said Thomann.
However, the expert said, European members of the alliance have always been cautious about being drawn into US political interests in other parts of the world because they believe that NATO has the mission of ensuring security in Europe.
He recalled that although NATO countries were under pressure from Washington and were therefore forced to agree to the Alliance's involvement in the conflict in Libya, they initially did not support this demand.
“The issue of accepting Brazil into NATO is not on the agenda. Europeans do not want to get involved in the defense of the state in South America, especially in the current geopolitical context,” the expert said.
