“This is an important moment for the Vietnam-US relationship as Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s visit comes at a time when the US has a new president,” said Walter Lohman, director of the Heritage Foundation’s Asian Studies Center. “Both sides are trying to understand each other’s concerns. It’s also very important that we have the first Southeast Asian leader to visit the US under the new administration. I’m very excited to hear about this meeting.”
Anthony Nelson - Director of East Asia and Pacific Affairs at Albright Stonebridge Consulting Group said that the content of the meeting will revolve around economic cooperation, however, there is still potential for cooperation between the two countries in many other areas.
According to Mr. Anthony Nelson, in addition to security and economy, people-to-people diplomacy is also developing strongly. Currently, there are quite a lot of Vietnamese students studying in the US and many young Vietnamese people are participating in the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative. Limiting climate change is also an important issue for Vietnam. Although the new US administration has not paid much attention to climate change, it is hoped that Vietnam will point out the benefits of security and disaster reduction rather than just climate change issues.
“There are many areas of cooperation for Vietnam this year as Vietnam hosts the APEC summit and is an important voice in ASEAN. Vietnam has become a true leader in regional issues. I think President Trump’s commitment to attend the APEC summit later this year is very remarkable and Vietnam should convince the US to participate in all APEC and ASEAN events,” said Mr. Anthony Nelson.
