(Baonghean.vn) - Anh Son district will have a plan to propose adding the geographical indication of Vinh oranges to the orange growing area in Bai Phu.

At the workshop to evaluate the results of the project to plant oranges and grapefruits and discuss development solutions in the district, recently organized by the People's Committee of Anh Son district, one of the solutions proposed in the coming time to develop orange trees and help orange growers have a stable, sustainable and long-term consumption market is to register with the Department of Science and Technology to add Vinh orange indication points for Bai Phu oranges, gradually building the Anh Son orange brand.

Currently, in Anh Son district, there are 125.5 hectares of oranges, of which some localities have relatively large planting areas such as: Dinh Son 62 hectares, Phuc Son 15 hectares, Long Son 9 hectares, Khai Son 8.6 hectares, Tho Son 6.7 hectares... The area of oranges for business is over 65 hectares; the remaining area is in the basic construction period; the average yield is 12 tons/ha, the output is about 780 tons.

Through the models participating in the project, the yield reaches about 20 tons/ha, bringing in an income of 300-350 million/ha after deducting costs. Photo: Thai Hien

The orange varieties put into production in the district are mainly Van Du, Xa Doai, Song Con, Valencia and Bu oranges.

To gradually restore the Bai Phu orange brand, Anh Son has implemented two commercial orange growing projects in Dinh Son commune. The first project, from 2014, involved 20 households with 10 hectares; the total capital for implementation was 600 million VND from the farmer support fund. The second project, from 2016, involved 40 households with 40 hectares of oranges; the total capital for implementation was 2 billion VND from the farmer support fund.

Through the evaluation of the project participation model, it is shown that the orange trees in the first 3 years are the basic construction period, so there is no income product, from the 4th year, the orange trees begin to enter the business period. From the 5th year onwards, the orange trees will give a stable harvest; the yield reaches about 20 tons/ha, bringing in an income of 300 - 350 million/ha after deducting costs.

The goal of the commercial orange growing project is to gradually expand the planting area by 2020 in Dinh Son commune to 70 hectares; orange output reaches 1,200 - 1,400 tons/year, revenue of 28 - 30 billion VND/year... From there, restore the Bai Phu orange brand, create a Bai Phu orange growing craft village, create stable jobs for over 300 rural workers; improve the lives of households directly participating in the project. Successfully build a model of farmer groups linking to grow commercial oranges, form cooperatives, and orange growing clubs.

To develop orange trees in the area, Anh Son is focusing on planning the area for orange planting, giving the right direction for growers to choose suitable lands, avoiding waste in investment, causing economic losses to the people. To improve the uniformity in productivity, quality and economic efficiency, it is necessary to strengthen training and in-depth training in science and technology for orange growers; encourage and have policies to support people in applying scientific and technological advances in production, improving and inventing labor tools, harvesting and preservation to improve productivity and production efficiency.

In addition, register with the Department of Science and Technology to add a Vinh orange indicator point, gradually build the Anh Son orange brand, including attaching the Vinh orange logo and attaching separate stamps and labels for Anh Son oranges.
