Accordingly, on May 27, Bac Ly commune received information that pigs were sick in two villages: Ban Buoc and Ban Phoa Khoang. Commune veterinary staff took samples for testing.
By the afternoon of May 28, the Veterinary Department of Region III had positive results for the two above-mentioned samples.
Mr. Nguyen Cong Hieu - Head of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station of Ky Son district said that today, May 29, the district veterinary staff coordinated with local authorities to directly go to the epidemic area to count the number of pigs infected with the disease, make records, destroy the pigs, and at the same time deploy solutions to prevent and control the epidemic.
However, due to the habit of raising free-range pigs, the work of counting and destroying pigs is somewhat difficult, while the villages are far from the commune center, and transportation is still inadequate.

Because the pig farming practice of the Ky Son highlanders is to let pigs roam freely, when an epidemic occurs, it is mandatory to spray disinfectants on all roads and in home gardens. Photo: Xuan Hoang |
The immediate solution is to isolate the epidemic area. Assign communes to assign police and military forces to patrol, guard checkpoints, and prohibit people from transporting pigs in and out of the area, including villages that have not yet had the epidemic. At the same time, the District People's Committee established animal disease control checkpoints in Chieu Luu commune and at traffic hubs and key points of communes and towns throughout the district.

Thus, by May 28, in Ky Son district, 8 communes (accounting for more than 1/3 of the district's communes) had African swine fever, including: Muong Tip, Huu Kiem, Bao Thang, Bao Nam, Keng Du, Na Loi, Ta Ca and Bac Ly. The number of pigs that had to be destroyed was over 200.
There is a risk that this remote border district will have a wider outbreak of African swine fever, as sick and dead pigs continue to occur in the communes.
