Dien Thap is the locality with the largest area of summer-autumn land in the district with 100 hectares. Ms. Nguyen Thi Luan, hamlet 3, Dien Thap is one of the few households that produce both winter-spring and summer-autumn crops in a year. She said: “My family does not do business or trade, so the family economy depends on a few sao of rice fields to cover the economic expenses. Other households do not want to farm because the summer-autumn crop is not as effective as the spring crop. Rice yield is only 2 - 2.5 quintals/sao, much lower than the winter-spring crop of over 3 quintals/sao. On the other hand, during that time they do business and will gain more profit.”
As for Mr. Ninh's family, because they have been doing business in Laos for many years, they hire people to do all the work from sowing, transplanting, caring for, and harvesting. Like many other businesses, his family only grows winter-spring rice to eat all year round, and leaves the land unused in the summer-autumn crop.
Ms. Cao Thi Su - Head of Dien Thap Agriculture Department said: Previously, Dien Thap produced 3 crops a year. But in recent years, economic life has developed due to favorable trade in Laos, so many households no longer want to produce agriculture. They only grow winter-spring crops to have rice to eat all year round, and often leave the summer-autumn crop fallow. To encourage people to produce, the commune has supported the cost of cleaning the fields, and has other support mechanisms. However, the important thing is still the mentality and awareness of the people.

Dien Hong is also a locality with a large area of abandoned land. Ms. Van, a resident of Dien Hong commune, confided: Since she and her husband started working as workers for NamSung VINA company in the area, they no longer have time to produce rice. During the winter-spring crop, they hire people to plow and plant seedlings, and during the summer-autumn crop, they leave it uncultivated. Doing other jobs, although hard, brings a more stable income than growing rice in the summer-autumn crop.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Trung - Chairman of Dien Hong People's Committee said: The whole commune has 60 hectares of unproductive land in the summer-autumn season of 2016, concentrated in the hamlets of Xuan Dinh, Hoa Thanh, Trung Thanh. The commune has actively propagated and mobilized people not to leave land unproductive, at the same time supporting and encouraging people to produce. In particular, producers of 10 sao or more will be supported with money for plowing.

Dien Hong people prepare the land for spring crop production. |
According to the report of Dien Chau district, the whole district has 184 hectares of uncultivated summer-autumn crops, of which Dien Thap and Dien Hong communes have an area of 160 hectares, Dien Doai 24 hectares, Dien Loi 2 hectares. On the other hand, due to the production of one crop for rice consumption and the abandonment of the other, businesses wanting to lease a period of 5-10 years for investment are not approved by the people. Another reason is that the summer-autumn crop in these areas does not have enough water to produce rice, often in a drought, so people no longer want to produce wet rice./.
