King Mai, also known as Mai Hac De, whose real name was Mai Thuc Loan, was a national hero who initiated and led the people to rise up against the Tang Dynasty. In 713, Mai Thuc Loan raised the flag of uprising in Hoan Chau.
From this land, the uprising quickly spread to many places, at the same time, there was a connection with countries in the region such as Lam Ap, Chan Lap... The insurgent army captured Tong Binh citadel, liberated a large area, and established the independent Van An state for 10 years (713 - 722).
In 722, during the battle to protect the capital Van An, King Mai heroically sacrificed himself at the foot of Dun Mountain. After King Mai passed away, his third son Mai Thuc Huy, also known as Mai Thieu De, succeeded him and continued to lead the uprising. However, it was suppressed by the Tang Dynasty not long after.

To commemorate the merits of King Mai, the people built a mausoleum and a temple. The feudal dynasties of our country all had decrees to posthumously honor Mai Hac De and list him as an international king. After 13 centuries of existence, King Mai's mausoleum has always been carefully preserved by the people.
Mai Hac De's tomb and temple were ranked as a National Historical Relic on January 12, 1996. Every year, two important festivals take place at the relic: the Mai King Festival from the 13th to the 16th of the first lunar month and the Mai King's death anniversary on the 16th of the ninth lunar month.
