Information from the Ministry of Education and Training said that the university admission regulations for 2018 are expected to have some changes, including removing the floor score and reducing regional priority points by 50% compared to previous years.

Specifically, the regional priority score is expected to decrease by 50%, the difference between regions will be 0.25 points instead of 0.5 points as before.

Thus, the highest regional priority score is 0.75 points for candidates in region 1. Priority scores for candidates in rural region 2 and region 2 are 0.5 and 0.25 points respectively.

Reducing regional priority points can reduce the gap between regions, partly resolving the shortcomings in priority points in previous admissions.

However, cases of studying at the same school but at two different locations, leading to some people getting credit and others not, will still happen. This is just a prediction. In the near future, the Ministry of Education and Training will issue a draft to collect opinions before issuing official regulations.

In addition to the issue of regional priority points, the Ministry of Education and Training also plans to abolish the university floor score. Instead, the ministry will set a separate threshold to ensure input quality for universities, pedagogical colleges, and teacher training programs.

In addition, the principle of rounding the national high school exam scores has also changed. The odd points of the total score of the entire exam are rounded to 2 decimal places instead of being rounded to 0.25 as before. Thus, candidates who score 4.99 points will keep this score, not rounded up to 5 points.

Previously, the ministry also sent a dispatch to universities and colleges training teachers to solicit comments on the draft plan for the 2018 national high school exam and the plan for university and college admission based on the results of this exam.

The Ministry has proposed two options for calculating the combined exam scores. Option 1 is to keep the combined exam with 3 scores for each component subject (similar to 2017).

In option 2, each combined test has the content of 3 component subjects but is arranged into a complete test, scored with a unified score for the entire test (not divided into 3 scores for each component subject as in 2017).

In general, schools support option 1 to create more stability and convenience for candidates.
