State Duma comments on announcement of Russia's nuclear superiority over the United States
Russia will not be drawn into a nuclear arms race, - Yury Shvytkin, Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma's Defense and Security Committee, said in an interview with RT.
The congressman commented on the excerpt of the document published by the media, taken from the opening part of the US nuclear doctrine. This document states that Russia is ahead of the United States and its allies in the production of nuclear weapons and the development of non-strategic nuclear systems.
Mr. Shvytkin emphasized that Russia's actions in this area are defensive in nature, the corresponding doctrine also contains a view of the external threat.
"The current actions of the United States reveal unfriendly plans in relations with our State and allies. The United States tries to justify its actions by expanding its military potential, supposedly to counter the threat from Russia," the lawmaker told RT.
In a statement to the press, the Pentagon said the United States has several options for its nuclear doctrine. The final version of the document must be approved by the agency's head, Secretary James Mattis, and the US head of state, President Donald Trump.
