Using 'magic eyes' to fine railway violations and ensure train safety

September 17, 2017 18:51

Vietnam Railways Corporation is testing the installation of surveillance cameras at railway crossings, as a basis for "cold fines" for violations and to limit risks to train safety.

Recently, there have been a series of railway accidents at level crossings between trains and trucks, all caused by careless drivers, lack of observation, and deliberate crossing of the railway.

For example, the railway section of about 5 km through Thuong Tin district, Hanoi, has a large traffic volume, especially trucks carrying goods. Every time a train passes, the level crossing warning system such as signal lights, alarm bells, barriers, gatekeepers, etc. always operates at full capacity. However, many drivers still try to pass just to save a few minutes. Especially at night, many drivers drive recklessly, still disregarding the danger and rushing through the level crossing.

Installing surveillance cameras at crossroads is an urgent requirement today.

Faced with this reality, installing "magic eye" warning fish to monitor railway images and promptly prevent incidents is an urgent solution.

According to Mr. Truong Binh, Deputy Head of Technical - Safety Department of Hanoi Signal Information Joint Stock Company (Vietnam Railway Corporation), the situation of road vehicles, especially cars recklessly overtaking, crashing into signal information equipment, barriers is common at automatic warning level crossings with automatic barriers installed, causing great damage to the Railway industry. Therefore, through monitoring images online at the monitoring center, if there is an unstable problem at the level crossing, the Railway industry can send local staff to handle it promptly, ensuring the level crossing operates well, ensuring train safety.

Through research, the installation of automatic warning cameras at level crossings is very effective. Through the camera, all activities at the level crossing are recorded. Therefore, in cases where vehicles causing damage to signal information equipment such as: crashing into lamp posts, information posts or crashing into or breaking barriers, the company takes image data, license plates and notifies the police to find the violators and handle them. Most of these cases, when the camera data is transferred to the police, are handled promptly, and the violators voluntarily pay back the damage caused.
