Sugar is the 'new drug'

Scientists have recently discovered that sugar, not fat, is harmful to health. But tWhy do experts get it wrong for so long?

Originated by Dr. Ancel Keys

Fat is the “enemy” of health. This theory was proposed by American researcher Ancel Keys (1904-2004) in the 50s of the 20th century. The Keys theory states that saturated fat found in meat, meat products, eggs and some plants is the ingredient that increases the total cholesterol concentration in the blood, leading to the effect of increasing the risk of arterial blockage and cardiovascular diseases. By the end of the 80s, Keys theory was widely accepted.

One of the first scientists to recognize Keys’ mistake was Dr. James DiNicolantonio of Ithaca College, New York. The scientist launched a massive publicity campaign to inform people about the medical error that had been made for years, and to make them aware that sugar and carbohydrates were the real threat.

Saturated fat is not linked to coronary heart disease.

A team of researchers from the UK and the Netherlands analyzed the results of 76 studies involving nearly 650,000 volunteers. The scientists concluded that saturated fat – regardless of the actual concentration in the blood, or in the food consumed – “has no impact on the occurrence of coronary heart disease”.

The mistake originated from Ancel Keys and his research mission to convince people that saturated fat causes heart disease. In the 1950s, heart disease was one of the main causes of premature death in the United States. Dr. Keys, who was then teaching at the University of Minnesota, noticed that unlike Americans, people in Mediterranean countries rarely suffered from heart disease. According to the American scientist, the Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, and nuts, worked wonders. This phenomenon helped Dr. Keys reap great success in 1958, when he published the so-called "Seven Countries Report."

Exposing Dr. Keys' Fraud

However, in fact, the American scientist only collected information from 22 countries whose data met his hypothesis and ignored data from 15 other countries that did not match his subjective wishes.

Danish researcher Dr. Uffe Ravnskov explained that if Dr. Keys had objectively analyzed the data collected from all countries in his report, the theory that equated fat with heart disease would have been completely denied. By this means, he won the powerful position of “senior expert” at the prestigious American Heart Association, and by 1984 the theory named after Keys was popularized and widely accepted.

Recent studies have shown that all saturated fats are beneficial to health. Moreover, stearic acid, a saturated fat found in chocolate and beef, helps keep the heart in good shape.

In recent years, more and more studies in the US and Europe have concluded that sugar is a food that causes obesity much faster than fat. According to the CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), 30 years ago, when the menu rich in sugar and low in saturated fat was not popular, only 15% of Americans were obese. By 1999-2000, when this menu was widely popularized, obesity had attacked 27.5% of American men and 33.4% of women in this country.

Sugar abuse, especially refined sugar, is considered a dangerous poison no less than drugs. Eating too much sugar will "rob" the body of many minerals, some vitamins (especially vitamin B1), increase blood pressure, increase triglyceride concentration (blood fat), increase bad cholesterol concentration (LDL) in the blood, increase the risk of myocardial infarction.
