On June 24, the world gold price fell nearly 1%, to the lowest level in nearly two weeks, after the market recorded positive signs of an end to the war between Iran and Israel. The ceasefire agreement implemented after 12 days of fighting has calmed investors' risk aversion.
Specifically, spot gold prices fell 0.85% to their lowest level since June 11. Meanwhile, US gold futures prices fell further, down 1.7% to $3,335.50 an ounce.
Ilya Spivak, head of global macro analysis at Tastylive, said the situation has shown signs of cooling down significantly after progress in reducing tensions between the US and Iran. This has caused most short-term geopolitical risks to gradually recede from the market.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel was in effect, calling on both sides not to violate it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also announced that his country agreed to Trump's proposal. The news immediately had a positive impact on global financial markets, with stocks rising sharply and oil prices falling to a two-week low as concerns about disruptions in oil supplies eased.
Aside from geopolitical developments, investors are closely watching Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's testimony before the House Financial Services Committee later Tuesday. Powell has previously been cautious about signaling an early rate cut, while President Trump continues to call for a 2-3 percentage point rate cut to support the economy.
According to Mr. Spivak, in the long term, gold prices still tend to increase, but in the short term, there may be a slight adjustment. If Chairman Powell signals that the Fed will not cut interest rates more than twice this year, the USD may recover, putting further downward pressure on gold prices. Because gold tends to increase in a low interest rate environment, when the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as gold decreases.
While gold prices fell, other precious metals also fell. Spot silver fell 0.5% to $35.96 an ounce. Platinum fell 1.1% to $1,280.58 an ounce, while palladium fell a stronger 2.2% to $1,055.15 an ounce.
