Foreign teachers touched to celebrate November 20 in Nghe An
(Baonghean.vn) - Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20, is a holiday to honor the "ferrymen" and a day for students to express their gratitude to their teachers. Many foreign teachers living and working in Vinh City (Nghe An) also feel the great significance of this holiday.

Having been teaching at a private school in Vinh City for nearly 4 months, Canadian teacher Samuel Desjardins said that although he is a foreign teacher, he is very excited to know about Vietnamese Teachers' Day on November 20. For him, this is like a special festival for teachers and is also eagerly awaited by students every day. This is completely different from the Teachers' Day in Canada.
"In Canada, Teachers' Day is celebrated very simply. On that day, the principal will buy a cake, place it in the room, and then notify the students to come and express their thanks to the teachers who directly teach them. That's all!" - Mr. Samuel shared.
As for Camille This - a volunteer who teaches French in Vinh city, she is very excited about Vietnamese Teachers' Day on November 20. The streets are filled with flowers for teachers, which is completely different from the teachers' day in France.
"In France, the holiday for teachers is very simple. It is not celebrated with the same affection as in Vietnam and what I witnessed in Vietnam surprised me. Because sometimes teachers in France do not receive the same respect. I think in France, there should be a holiday for teachers like in Vietnam," Camille said.

Teacher Sean Laurence was surprised by the small gift his students gave him on November 20. Photo: NVCC |
Living and attached to Nghe An for many years, American teacher Sean Laurence has experienced many November 20ths and this has also become a special day for him. “I am very happy to have students visit me on Teachers’ Day. They bring funny stories and energy that make me laugh and happy” - said teacher Sean.
According to Mr. Sean, Teachers’ Day in the US is completely different from that in Vietnam. In the US, students will not visit their teachers at home. When they meet their teachers on this day, they will say “Happy Teachers’ Day” to them. They may also receive an apple from the teacher.
“The most special gift I received on November 20 was a handwritten card. The flowers and fruits were also very beautiful. I personally love that students take the time to write cards for me. The drawings and words that the students wrote made me very touched by the feelings they had for me,” said Mr. Sean.
