Pioneering the development of new treatment fields

Doctor Tran Van Tu - Department of Trauma and Neurosurgery is known as a pioneer in developing the field of brain surgery at Vinh City General Hospital, although his age and career are very young.

Sharing about the opportunity to choose the medical profession, he confided his desire to treat and save people and contribute to changing the awareness of healthcare for his hometown people. After graduating from Vinh Medical University, he chose to work at Vinh City General Hospital with the desire for an environment that would give him the opportunity to develop his abilities, be trained in his profession and devote himself to his career.

Doctor Tu is passionate about the field of neurosurgery (diseases of the skull and spine) for a special reason. “For patients with skull and brain diseases (mainly traumatic brain injury and stroke), the golden time for emergency treatment is the first 4-6 hours. If it is late, the risk of death or sequelae is high. Therefore, I am determined to pursue this field, with the desire to help patients receive early intervention, avoiding unfortunate consequences. Witnessing patients revive, especially seriously ill patients with a “miraculous” recovery when given emergency treatment and timely surgery, for a physician there is no happiness comparable” - Doctor Tu confided.

After a period of working at the hospital, with a good professional background and passion for the profession, he was given the opportunity by the leadership to receive specialized training in the field of brain surgery at Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC). During this time, he also diligently updated his knowledge through seminars, training programs and exchanges with leading experts. After being granted a certificate to practice brain surgery, in mid-2019, he returned to develop neurosurgery and became the "foundation" for this new field at Vinh General Hospital.

The implementation of brain trauma surgery at district hospitals initially encountered many difficulties, and few patients knew about it. However, with the support of the leadership, colleagues, and with his dedication and devotion to patients, Dr. Tu has always diligently studied and updated new knowledge to further enrich his professional "capital". Many scientific topics bearing his name have been effectively applied at the hospital, such as: Surgery for chronic subdural hematoma, epidural hematoma, and surgery for acute subdural hematoma... With the effective support of the hospital's modern medical equipment system (256-slice CT.Scanner, 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine)... the field of brain surgery at the hospital is increasingly affirmed.

From a new field that not many patients know about, up to now, each month the Department of Trauma and Neurosurgery receives 15 cases of brain and skull diseases for surgery. Doctor Tu has directly performed surgery to save the lives of hundreds of brain and skull diseases, including difficult cases. With solid professional qualifications and the heart of "A good doctor is like a mother", he leaves an impression on patients as a young doctor full of enthusiasm, dedication, warmth and a professional attitude in every stage of examination and treatment.

Recalling memories of his career, he enthusiastically told about miraculous cases of recovery after receiving timely emergency care and surgery. That was the case of patient LBL in Vinh City who was hospitalized due to coma due to traumatic brain injury and subdural hematoma in the right hemisphere due to a traffic accident. Upon receiving news of the case, Dr. Tu was returning to his hometown on his day off, so he immediately returned to the hospital that night to perform surgery to save the patient with his colleagues. Or the story of the revival of patient LVT in Nam Dan District who was hospitalized due to coma due to cerebral hemorrhage, in a very critical condition. After emergency care for the patient, Dr. Tu and his team immediately consulted and performed timely surgery, saving the patient's life.

I always remind myself to do my best to help bring life to many patients and happiness to their families. For me, reviving each patient is to enrich myself with joy and motivation to fuel my passion for the profession.

After 3 years of devoting himself to developing the field of neurosurgery, up to now, he and his colleagues have mastered most of the techniques of brain trauma surgery, but the young doctor is still always concerned about the desire to learn more advanced techniques in treating the brain and spine and have more colleagues to develop the field of neurosurgery, becoming a trusted address for patients in and outside the province; helping patients limit treatment costs, no longer having to struggle to transfer to another facility.

Willing to volunteer

Identifying youth as an opportunity to contribute, therefore, not only always striving to learn new treatment methods, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Hospital Youth Union, Doctor Tu is one of the active and energetic cores, always pioneering in actively participating in social security activities, mobilizing support for the poor and examining and providing free medicine to poor patients in mountainous, remote and isolated areas. He also always volunteers to donate blood to rescue patients at the hospital when needed and is ready for all activities for poor patients and the poor.

“Doctor Tu is a typical example of the youth of Vinh City General Hospital. He is enthusiastic, dares to think, dares to do, has solid expertise, and is devoted to his patients.

The team of young doctors currently accounts for 2/3 of the total number of doctors and nurses at the hospital. Training and improving the quality of young human resources is one of the focuses that the hospital has been effectively implementing, in addition to continuing to build a professional working environment, investing in facilities, equipment, mechanisms, and reasonable policies, aiming at the goal of increasingly improving the quality of the hospital; increasingly better meeting the needs of medical examination and treatment of the people", Doctor CKI Nguyen Trong Hieu - Deputy Director of Vinh City General Hospital shared.
