Today, December 1, Cua Lo town officially merged into Vinh city, Nghe An has 20 district-level administrative units.
Vinh City officially became a coastal city with a population of more than half a million people.

Today, December 1, 2024, Resolution No. 1243/NQ-UBTVQH15 of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the arrangement of district and commune-level administrative units of Nghe An province for the period 2023 - 2025 takes effect.
In the period of 2023 - 2025, Nghe An will reorganize 3 units (including 1 unit subject to mandatory reorganization, Cua Lo town, and 2 adjacent related units, Vinh city and Nghi Loc district) at the district level.
Specifically, the entire natural area and population of Cua Lo town and the entire natural area and population of 4 communes: Nghi Xuan, Phuc Tho, Nghi Thai, Nghi Phong (Nghi Loc) will be merged into Vinh city. After the arrangement, Vinh city has a natural area of 166.22 km2.2and officially became a coastal city. The population of Vinh city exceeded half a million people (580,669 people).
At the commune level, 92 units were reorganized (including 65/89 units subject to mandatory reorganization and 27 adjacent related units); 4 units subject to encouraged reorganization; 24/89 units were not reorganized due to special factors.
After the reorganization, Nghe An reduced 1 district-level administrative unit, from 21 to 20 units including: Vinh City, 2 towns: Hoang Mai, Thai Hoa and 17 districts: Nghi Loc, Dien Chau, Quynh Luu, Yen Thanh, Nghia Dan, Quy Hop, Quy Chau, Que Phong, Ky Son, Tuong Duong, Con Cuong, Anh Son, Tan Ky, Do Luong, Thanh Chuong, Nam Dan, Hung Nguyen.
Nghe An province also reduced 48 commune-level administrative units, from 460 to 412 units, including 5 newly established towns: Tra Lan (Con Cuong), Kim Nhan (Anh Son), Hoa Thanh (Yen Thanh), Dien Thanh (Dien Chau) and Dung (Thanh Chuong) on the basis of rearranging administrative units.
In addition, Nghe An also merged dozens of communes together to establish 29 new communes including: Dien Hoa, Thinh Truong (Nghi Loc); Bach Ngoc (Do Luong); Binh Hop, Hoan Long (Tan Ky); Thuan Long, Van Hai, Phu Nghia, Quynh Son, Minh Luong, Binh Son (Quynh Luu); Minh Son, Thanh Qua, Kim Bang, Xuan Duong, Minh Tien, Mai Giang (Thanh Chuong); Xuan Thap, Ngoc Bich, Hung Hai, Hanh Quang (Dien Chau); Thinh My, Thong Tan, Phuc Loi (Hung Nguyen); Nghia Thai, Xuan Hong (Nam Dan); Van Tu, Dong Thanh (Yen Thanh); Tam Dinh (Anh Son).
Nghe An Provincial People's Committee has issued a Plan to implement Resolution No. 1243/NQ-UBTVQH15 of the National Assembly Standing Committee, which requires the completion of the announcement of the establishment of new district and commune-level administrative units before December 25, 2024.
Nghe An is located in the center of the North Central region with an area of about 16,490.25 km2, the largest in the country. The terrain is inclined in the Northwest - Southeast direction, with 3 distinct ecological regions: mountainous, midland, coastal plain. Of which, mountainous areas account for 83% of the area.
The name Nghe An first appeared in 1030 under the reign of King Ly Thai Tong when the king changed the name of Hoan Chau to Nghe An Chau.
According to the Statistical Yearbook, the population of Nghe An province by 2020 was 3,365,198 people, mainly living in rural areas (with 84.5%). Population density 204 people/km².
The ethnic minority and mountainous population living in Nghe An province is over 1.2 million people (accounting for 36% of the province's total population). The ethnic minority population is 491,267 people, accounting for 14.76% of the province's total population and 40.93% of the population in mountainous areas.
Nghe An currently has 47 ethnic groups living together, of which the ethnic minorities with a high proportion are: Thai (338,559 people), Tho (71,420 people), Kho Mu (43,139 people), Mong (33,957 people).
