Dien Chau district destroys sick and dead pigs in Dien An commune

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of March 18, the Veterinary Department of Dien Chau district (Nghe An) took samples for testing and destroyed sick and dead pigs at a household in hamlet 12, Dien An commune.

According to Mr. Cao Van Cuong in Hamlet 12, Dien An Commune (Dien Chau), his family raised 40 pigs, including 4 sows. On the evening of March 17, the pigs were still eating and drinking normally and were in stable health. On the morning of March 18, the family went to check and discovered 1 dead pig and 2 sick pigs.

Immediately, Mr. Cuong reported to the Dien An commune authorities and the Dien Chau district veterinary staff. The authorities came to check the pigs, the clinical examination results showed that the two sick pigs had signs of red and swollen eyes, purple skin on the abdomen and ear edges, and paralysis of the two front legs. The dead pig was euthanized to take samples to send for testing.

It is known that Mr. Cuong's family's pigs have not been vaccinated with any type of vaccine.

After checking and completing the procedures, the district veterinary staff proceeded to destroy 2 pigs (including 1 dead pig and 1 seriously ill pig). The remaining sick pig is being closely checked and monitored.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Bon - Head of Dien Chau Veterinary Station said: Up to now, there have been no cases of African swine fever in the district; however, there have been 3 localities where pigs have died, including Dien Thanh, Dien Truong and Dien An communes.

"The district is focusing on monitoring the remaining pig herd, while strengthening strict inspection of pig slaughtering, trading, and transportation activities in the spirit of not letting the disease spread in the area. Veterinary staff must always be on duty 24/7 to promptly handle cases of sick and dead pigs reported by people and authorities," Mr. Bon added.

Previously, on March 16, at the house of Ms. Cao Thi Kiem in Hamlet 5, Dien Phuc Commune, 2 sick pigs were also found. Upon receiving the news, veterinary staff came to check and take samples for testing. The test results on March 17 were negative for African swine fever. Currently, the 2 pigs are being monitored and treated.
