Ksteam power

Coming to Chau Thon commune, Que Phong border district, we were enthusiastically told by Na Ty village chief - Mr. Hoang Van Minh about the village's development process: "Although the hilly area is large, people's lives are still difficult, poverty and hunger are always present. Since the district and commune officials came to open training classes on farming techniques, people now know how to grow crops and raise livestock, and their lives have improved a lot. My family alone has raised a herd of 6 buffaloes and cows and built a model of raising Quy ducks, earning hundreds of millions of VND/year. Thanks to that, we have money to take care of our children's education...".

Mr. Hoang Trung Cuong - Chairman of Chau Thon Commune People's Committee said: Along with the efforts of ethnic minorities, the State's policy of supporting crops and livestock through the National Target Program for the period 2021 - 2025 has helped hundreds of poor households to receive economic development support. Thereby, in 2024, 47 poor households were reduced, bringing the poverty rate down to 5.32% compared to 2023.

Currently, Chau Thon commune is implementing 5 models: A model of raising bamboo rats with a scale of 19 households in Hung Tien hamlet and Poi village; A model of community groups growing mulberry and raising silkworms in Hop Tien and Minh Tien hamlets; A model of community raising free-range chickens and Quy ducks in Na Ty hamlet; A model of community raising Chi Lang custard apples with 19 households in Hung Tien hamlet and a model of raising black chickens with 4 households in Ban Quanh hamlet. These are new models, which will be implemented in early 2025, aiming to exploit the potential of the locality, helping people increase their income.

Tri Le border commune is a place of settlement for four ethnic groups: Kinh, Thai, Kho Mu, Mong. At this time, the Mong people here are busy getting water into the fields, tilling the land, clearing the banks, treating the fields... preparing for the next spring crop.

Ảnh: Quang An

Mr. Ly Ca Dinh in Na Nieng village, Tri Le commune said that his family has 3 terraced fields, with an area of 800m2.2. Although it is still more than a month until the spring rice planting season, the couple is now bringing water into the fields and using machinery to prepare the soil. For the people in the highlands, agricultural production ensures food, so farming is the top priority to achieve high productivity and stable food. In addition to taking care of the fields, the family also promotes raising buffalo, cows, chickens, etc., so the family has escaped poverty.

Chairman of Tri Le Commune People's Committee - Mr. Lu Van Cuong said: "Tri Le is a border commune, nearly 100% of the population are ethnic minorities. The people only know how to farm and raise livestock, so life is difficult to break through. However, with diligence, hard work, and perseverance in production, people's lives are increasingly improved, and hungry and poor households are gradually decreasing. In addition to 450 hectares of land for wet rice production, people in the commune, especially the Mong people, are good at raising buffaloes and cows for sale, bringing in a stable source of income.

Thanks to the capital of the National Target Program, from 2023 to now, in Tri Le commune, 210 poor and near-poor households have been supported with breeding cows, breeding pigs, breeding goats, breeding chickens and ducks to raise and develop the household economy. Therefore, the work of hunger eradication and poverty reduction in the commune is becoming more and more practical. Typically, Mr. Tho Chong Ly and Mr. Ly Tong Dinh in Na Nieng village know how to apply the State's support policies and work hard in production, have eliminated poverty and become well-off households in the commune.

The Party Committee and the government of Chau Kim commune have also paid special attention to hunger eradication and poverty reduction for the people. Mr. Ha Minh Tuan - Secretary of the Party Committee of Chau Kim commune said that in addition to directing the development of local products, such as planting Japonica rice, Khau Cay Noi sticky rice and raising local buffaloes, cows, pigs and chickens, the commune has also implemented 30 "Smart People's Mobilization" models in all fields, including 13 economic models. Typical examples include the vegetable growing model in Do, Khoang Do and Co Muong villages; the model of preserving and developing Quy cinnamon trees in Co Muong village with a total area of 5 hectares; the model of renovating mixed gardens and planting fruit trees with 2.9 hectares in Co Muong and Huu Van villages; the goat raising occupational complex in Huu Van village, etc.

At the same time, hundreds of poor and near-poor households in the commune received support for seedlings and livestock from the National Target Program, so the poverty rate gradually decreased. In 2024, the poverty rate in the commune decreased by 3%, down to 11.05%, below the new rural standard.

Exploiting potential

Vice Chairman of Que Phong District People's Committee Bui Van Hien said: As a 30a district of the country, people's lives mainly depend on agricultural production, the poverty rate of the district is high, so hunger eradication and poverty reduction for people is always a top priority for authorities at all levels. The advantage of Que Phong is that the district has Pu Hoat Nature Reserve with an area of 84,000 hectares, of which 34,000 hectares are special-use forests and 50,000 hectares are protective forests.

The district also has many special plants and rare medicinal herbs with high economic value such as linden, yellow tea, bon bo... Therefore, with the sponsorship of organizations implementing projects to replicate sustainable livelihood models from yellow tea, linden, meter and bon bo, people and localities, organizations have implemented planting many special plants, bringing economic value to the district of tens of billions of dong each year.

In particular, from the support capital of the National Target Program for the period 2021 - 2025, in the past 3 years, Que Phong district has supported livestock breeds such as cows, pigs, chickens, goats and cinnamon trees for 3,162 poor and near-poor households to raise and plant with a total capital of nearly 40 billion VND. In 2024, Que Phong will plant more than 200 hectares of cinnamon trees, from the support capital of the National Target Program.

In addition to the Government's support policies, Que Phong also supports and guides communes to convert low-yield rice areas to Japonia rice (Japan). Up to now, many households in Chau Kim, Muong Noc, Tri Le, Nam Giai and Tien Phong communes have switched to growing Japonica rice, increasing the total area of this rice variety to nearly 700 hectares, with an estimated output of more than 3,000 tons, and a price 1.5 times higher than that of normal rice. Que Phong district is building rice products into specialties, with branded goods and participating in exports.

With the efforts of each person, along with the support policies of the State, the poverty rate of Que Phong district gradually decreased. In 2024, the poverty rate decreased by 4.09%, the average of the whole district decreased to 30.09%.

The efforts to overcome difficulties, the sustainable development of livestock and specialized farming models, etc., are bringing economic efficiency to the border district of Que Phong, which is a solid premise to create new steps and new directions, helping ethnic people to rise up to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty sustainably./.
