Ms. Lau Y Cha, in Lu Thanh village, Tay Son commune (Ky Son) said: From early morning every day, she goes to the field to harvest taro, and in the early afternoon carries it to Muong Xen town to sell to traders. The family grows taro in the field, in addition to natural taro growing everywhere. Every day, she harvests 20kg of taro, and also finds banana flowers and wild vegetables to sell for extra income.

In Muong Xen Town, there are currently many traders who specialize in purchasing specialties for the people, transporting them downstream for consumption, according to consumer orders. A trader said: All the products that the people carry out are bought, then packaged and sent by passenger bus downstream for consumption. It is the beginning of the season when ethnic minorities go to the fields to harvest specialties, so the quantity of goods is still small. Because there are not many goods, the prices of the products are quite high, specifically, pumpkin is 6,000 VND/kg, taro is 7,000 - 15,000 VND/kg, ginger is 15,000 VND/kg, cabbage is 15,000 VND/kg; mustard greens are 15,000 VND/bunch, and melon is 12,000 - 15,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Truong - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ky Son district said: In recent years, specialties such as pumpkin, taro, ginger and various vegetables have been a significant source of income for many people in the highlands of Ky Son. Currently, the district has not yet counted the output of specific specialties because most of these products are grown scatteredly on the fields and some are grown on their own. The communes with the most taro and pumpkin are Tay Son and Na Ngoi; while ginger is grown a lot in Muong Long, Huoi Tu and Pha Danh.

"In early 2018, the Department of Science and Technology coordinated with a business and the district to plant a 1-hectare taro model in Muong Long commune, which will be harvested soon. If the model is successful, we plan to replicate and develop the local specialty taro," added Mr. Nguyen Xuan Truong.
