Lax management of hazardous waste at Matrix Vinh Company Limited
(Baonghean.vn) - That was one of the issues raised when the Supervisory Delegation of Nghe An Provincial People's Council worked with Matrix Vinh Company Limited on compliance with the law on environmental protection, labor safety and hygiene, and policies for employees in the period 2016 - 2018 on the afternoon of October 26.

This is a children's toy manufacturing company with 2,175 employees as of the end of June 2018, of which 2,109 are female. The company has 2,175 employees participating in social insurance, health insurance and compulsory insurance.
The average income of employees including salary, bonus and other benefits is more than 3.6 million VND/person/month. In 2016, there were 3 work accidents at the company, in 2017 there was 1 work accident.
After directly inspecting the scene and related documents, the members of the monitoring team pointed out a number of issues that need to be addressed.
Deputy Head of the Department of Culture and Society, Provincial People's Council Nguyen Thi Lan suggested that the company must amend and supplement the labor contract in accordance with Decree 05/2015 of the Government detailing and guiding the implementation of a number of contents of the Labor Code; at the same time, it was also clarified that the company only paid wages according to the regional minimum wage, not according to the seniority of the employee.

Regarding environmental protection work, Lieutenant Colonel Dao Duy Chien - Deputy Head of the Environmental Crime Prevention Police Department, Nghe An Police, a member of the monitoring team, said that in the company's hazardous waste registration book, there is a list of 9 types including: rags, paint residue, paint cans, packaging, waste batteries, solvents, broken light bulbs, medical waste, and waste oil.
However, through actual inspection at the hazardous waste warehouse, it was found that the warehouse had no lock but was only tied with a rough steel wire; especially in the warehouse there was no waste including rags, batteries, broken light bulbs, and used oil as listed.
“So where is this number?”, Lieutenant Colonel Chien asked, adding that the company also did not provide documents for transferring hazardous waste; the contract with the transport and treatment unit did not have a number. “Hazardous waste management is very weak,” the Deputy Head of the Provincial Police Department for Environmental Crime Prevention and Control assessed.

Concluding the meeting, comrade Le Hong Vinh - Member of the Standing Committee, Chairman of the Provincial Party Committee's Inspection Committee, Head of the Economic - Budget Committee, Provincial People's Council requested the company to review and complete the content of the labor contract in accordance with regulations; implement well the policies for employees, including increasing income; renovate the canteen area to be more airy;...
Regarding environmental protection, the Head of the Economic - Budget Committee, Provincial People's Council requested Matrix Vinh Company Limited to add dust filtration and vacuum systems at factories to minimize environmental pollution and ensure workers' health; at the same time, the company has a written report and documents related to the contents that the monitoring team pointed out but the company has not yet explained at the meeting, especially the issue of management and treatment of hazardous waste and wastewater sent to the monitoring team.
