At the Conference on Integrated Disaster Risk Management and Resilience in Agriculture held in Hanoi this morning (October 13), Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said that on average, each year natural disasters kill and leave missing over 300 people, causing economic losses of 1-1.5% of GDP (equivalent to nearly 1.3 billion USD).

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized: Vietnam is one of the countries most affected and impacted by natural disasters and climate change, especially storms, floods, droughts and saltwater intrusion. In Vietnam at this time, the heaviest rain and flood in decades is causing widespread flooding in the central and northern mountainous provinces, seriously affecting people's lives and production.

Tens of millions of Vietnamese people are living with and trying to adapt to natural disasters. Vietnam has also prioritized allocating many resources to natural disaster prevention, especially investing in infrastructure projects such as roads, dykes, embankments, bridges, culverts and other works serving production and people's lives, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung shared.

On the occasion of World Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (October 13), Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung called on the international community to increase support for developing countries and poor countries that are heavily affected by natural disasters, with priority given to supporting Vietnam in improving its capacity to warn, forecast, and assess natural disaster risks as well as its institutional capacity and management and operation in natural disaster prevention.

At the Conference, delegates discussed and promoted policy dialogue on integrated disaster risk management, including institutional capacity, financial solutions, water resources management, etc.

One of the topics of interest at the Conference was: Vietnam's risks and sensitivity to El Nino: impacts on agricultural production, food security, health and socio-economics; Current responses, gaps and next steps to improve resilience for agricultural food; Mitigating the risk of riverbank and coastal erosion...

On this occasion, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also launched the Research Project on Enhancing the resilience of agricultural food to risks related to El Nino./.
