NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg affirmed that although Britain left the European common roof, relations between the EU and NATO are still going well.

Speaking to the press at the EU Summit taking place in Belgium, Mr. Stoltenberg said the EU and NATO will continue to cooperate and develop, despite the vote in favor of Britain's departure.

Like 22 other EU member states, Britain is a member of NATO. London’s withdrawal from the EU could hamper efforts to strengthen collective security, including the fight against the Islamic State and the formation of a united front near the borders of Russia and Ukraine.

Earlier on June 25, Mr. Stoltenberg commented that Britain's decision to leave would cause Europe to lose its inherent solidarity.

At the EU Summit on June 28, Mr. Stoltenberg continued to affirm that "solidarity and cooperation are extremely important before the election in the UK. Now it has become more important than ever."

Next week, NATO and the EU are expected to sign an unprecedented joint declaration on security cooperation in Warsaw, covering defense systems, countermeasures against military and non-military tactics, and efforts to stop people smuggling in the Mediterranean.

Many experts believe that Britain's withdrawal from the EU will cause internal division within the bloc and make signing efforts somewhat difficult.

At this Summit, Foreign Policy Director Federica Mogherini said she would present a new EU global strategy.

However, the German Marshall Military Analysis Agency said on June 28 that the EU's position in foreign policy has been seriously weakened after the Brexit event.
