(Baonghean) - For many different reasons, students today are no longer as interested in reading as they used to be. Therefore, establishing friendly libraries, organizing book fairs and competitions is a practical way to gradually rebuild the reading culture in schools.

The story of the "Reading Culture Ambassadors"

Nguyen Tuan Minh - Student of class 5D, Hung Dung 2 Primary School (Vinh city) is one of 24 ambassadors who have just been awarded at the "Reading Culture Ambassador" contest in 2019.

Reading Tuan Minh's entry, although only 9 pages long - quite "modest" compared to many other entries, this is a quite concise article, with a complete structure and clear writing style.

However, the most impressive story is “Loyalty” written by Minh himself, about the feelings of the dog Max and the cat Mi Mi for their owner. The story also becomes more attractive with the funny illustrations drawn by Minh himself. Besides, along with presenting in Vietnamese, Minh also expressed in English with a fluent and accurate writing...

When looking at Minh's entry, the judges were quite surprised, because it was beyond the ability of a 5th grader. As for his family, teachers and friends, they were not too surprised because in class Minh was an excellent student, studious and exemplary.

The boy also loves reading books, loves writing stories and learns a lot from his own books.

I want to work with the team to organize many reading activities in schools, organize book storytelling competitions or set up mini libraries right in the classroom."

With a rich imagination, Pham Ngoc Nu - 8A student, Cao Xuan Huy Secondary School (Dien Chau) created a story about the role of reading today, through the work "Story of the reading city".

In this work, Ngoc Nu has built the image of a civilized, modern city of the 13th century. However, because of relying too much on machines and robots, people here rarely seek knowledge, books and newspapers are a strange concept. One day, when the last library is closed, the city is invaded by a strange monster and they are forced to face a battle of wits. However, at this time, people realize that because they have not read books or accumulated knowledge for a long time, everything is empty.

“Nowadays, the main reason why people turn their backs on reading culture is because they do not realize the meaning and benefits of reading. For me, books not only help me improve my knowledge but also help me understand myself and gradually improve myself...”.

In nearly 190,000 entries to the “Reading Culture Ambassador” contest, each entry expressed a student’s dream of reading today. The first contest also created a rather exciting competitive atmosphere among schools, contributing to the development of the reading movement in schools.

Evaluating the contest, Mr. Duong Duy Tien - Director of Nghe An Library, a member of the organizing committee shared: "The contest only selected 24 ambassadors in many different contents, but the success brought much more than that. That is, through the contest, students have the opportunity to discover their own abilities, express many ideas about writing books, writing poems or composing interesting comic stories. And more than anyone else, they are the "Ambassadors of reading culture", who spread the love of books to everyone."

And more than anyone else, you are the "Ambassadors of reading culture", the ones who spread the love of books to everyone".

Building a reading culture in schools
“Library class” is a rather strange concept, but for students of Dong Thanh Primary School (Yen Thanh), this is a familiar thing and has become a class that many students look forward to. In this class, in a friendly, close space, students read stories and share their favorite books. Every month, during the flag-raising period at the beginning of the week, the school also organizes story-telling competitions based on books to encourage students to read books and learn from books in interesting and useful things.
Previously, Dong Thanh Primary School was still one of the most difficult schools in Yen Thanh district due to its long-standing and dilapidated construction. However, when the school learned that the district had a policy to build a “Friendly Library” model, it still tried to arrange 2 classrooms with an area of nearly 100 m2 to build a library for students.

“For students in our area, having a book is not easy. Therefore, since having a library with a new, lively and attractive space, students love it very much. Thanks to that, the school's reading movement has also gone into depth and become more and more practical.”

In the whole province, under the sponsorship of Zhinshan Organization (Taiwan), the friendly library model is only available in Thanh Chuong and Yen Thanh districts. However, in many other schools, despite the difficult physical conditions, to encourage students to read books, many green libraries and friendly libraries have been established.

Going to schools, especially primary schools, it is not difficult to see the image of boys and girls sitting under green libraries, placed under the shade of trees to read books. Or in the classrooms, it seems that every class has a mini library. Usually every 1-2 months, the homeroom teacher will encourage students to bring books to class to exchange with each other. The teacher is also the one who guides the students to choose good and useful books.

Along with that, the movement of reading and following books is also organized quite vigorously. For example, in April, on the occasion of Vietnam Book Day, Hong Son Primary School (Vinh city) organized a book festival with many activities such as displaying books, selling works created by students and organizing a food festival to raise funds to help pediatric cancer patients.

At Do Luong Town Primary School, for many years now, there have been volunteer trips to poor students in the highlands to give them books. The school also organizes reading festivals and implements the extracurricular activity of "sharing the content of your favorite book" on a kite to send to a close friend...

With a variety of activities, the reading movement in many schools, after being forgotten for several years, has now been gradually restored. This is also a very meaningful activity, not only creating a reading culture among students but also contributing to building friendly, positive schools, guiding students towards good, humane and emotional things...
