(Baonghean.vn) - Nghe An has done a good job of ensuring traffic safety, according to the assessment ofKhuat Viet Hung, Vice Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, at the working session between the Ministry of Transport and provincial leaders on the morning of September 23.

At the meeting, regarding the issue of traffic safety, Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Xuan Duong said that in recent years, this work has been paid attention to and directed strongly by provincial leaders with many synchronous solutions, the entire political system has participated in order to achieve the goal of preventing and repelling traffic accidents. Therefore, the traffic accident situation in the area in the first 8 months of 2016 has decreased in all 3 criteria of number of cases, number of deaths and number of injuries.

From December 16, 2015 to August 15, 2016, in Nghe An province, there were 163 traffic accidents, killing 117 people and injuring 116 people. Compared to the same period in 2015, there were 13 fewer accidents (7.4%), 10 fewer deaths (7.9%), and 13 fewer injuries (10.08%).

Assessing these results, Mr. Khuat Viet Hung - Vice Chairman in charge of the National Traffic Safety Committee said that Nghe An province has done a very good job in ensuring traffic safety in recent years. "In recent years, especially in the period 2011 - 2015, traffic safety and order in Nghe An have not changed dramatically, the accident rate has not decreased as much as in some other typical localities. However, Nghe An has one of the lowest traffic accident death rates in the country," Mr. Hung said, adding that in 2015, the death rate from traffic accidents in Nghe An was 6/100,000 people, while the national average was 9.4/100,000 people.

“Nghe An has a population of more than 3.1 million people, the largest area in the country, a large transportation network, and a large number of vehicles. With these characteristics, it is very difficult for Nghe An to further reduce accidents. This rate is lower than Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and other localities that are assessed to have good traffic safety and order,” Mr. Khuat Viet Hung emphasized.

Assessing the first 8 months of this year, the traffic accident rate in Nghe An has decreased significantly. Mr. Hung said that these results were achieved thanks to the attention of the Provincial Party Committee and the People's Committee of Nghe An province. "In recent years, the National Traffic Safety Committee has had plans to ensure traffic safety and order, and Nghe An has participated very fully and methodically.

Currently, Nghe An is one of four localities with a five-year traffic safety program for the 2016-2020 period. The locality has also identified goals and assigned specific tasks to each department and locality," Mr. Hung assessed.

However, to achieve better results, the Vice Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee suggested that Nghe An province and related sectors regularly conduct health check-ups for drivers, especially drug-addicted drivers.

Mr. Hung said that in Nghe An, the number of expired vehicles is very large, mainly trucks and passenger cars. After the expiration of their service life, these vehicles often move to operate in the mountainous areas. Therefore, Mr. Hung hopes that Nghe An provincial police will regularly organize patrols and controls in this area to detect and handle them.
