Nghe An: Heavy rain causes irrigation canal to break and hundreds of households are flooded
(Baonghean.vn)- The prolonged heavy rain combined with the water from upstream caused hundreds of households in Hoang Mai town to be flooded; hundreds of hectares of rice and crops in Quynh Luu district were damaged.
South Vuc Mau Canal Break
According to the scene, at around 2am this morning, July 4, the Nam Vuc Mau irrigation canal in hamlet 16, Quynh Van commune broke about 20 meters long. The cause was due to the amount of water from the canal system in Hoang Mai town combined with water flowing down from upstream, causing the canal to overflow and then break. All the water from the canal bed overflowed into the people's fields, flooding dozens of hectares of rice and vegetables.

It is known that Nam Vuc Mau canal is managed by Quynh Luu Irrigation Enterprise, the canal system originates from Vuc Mau Lake, passes through Quynh Van commune with a length of about 5 km. This canal plays a role in providing irrigation water for hundreds of hectares of rice fields in Quynh Van and Quynh Hoa communes.
The Nam Vuc Mau canal in Quynh Van commune has not been repaired for a long time, so when there is heavy rain, the water accumulates and causes the canal to break. To fix the broken Nam Vuc Mau canal, the unit waited until the water receded and it stopped raining before rebuilding the canal to provide irrigation water for agricultural production.

This morning, when the rain stopped, farmers were gathering in the fields to harvest flooded vegetables to limit damage. Ms. Ho Thi Minh in Quynh Bang commune said that her family had about 2 sao of green onions ready to harvest, but the heavy rain had completely flooded them. If they were not harvested, the sun would make them rot and spoil, and the remaining 1 sao of onions that had just been planted had to be pulled up and replanted.
According to households whose scallions were flooded, the price of vegetables suddenly dropped sharply due to the weather. Yesterday and before, scallions were purchased for 10,000-12,000 VND/kg, but today they were only purchased for 5,000 VND/kg.

The whole commune has about 142 hectares of vegetable area, of which about 70 hectares of green onions are deeply submerged in water, concentrated in the two hamlets of Tan Hai and Tan Giang. The heavy rain last night, July 3, not only caused flooding of vegetables but also reduced the income of the people because traders bought them at half the price.
To overcome the flooding situation, the locality is focusing on inspecting the production situation and taking measures to clear canals and fields. For the flooded areas of green onions, people are advised to harvest to avoid damage when the sun comes out; during the rainy season, people should not sow or plant.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district, due to the impact of storm No. 2 causing heavy rain, in addition to more than 120 hectares of vegetables being flooded, the whole district has about 30 - 40 hectares of rice also deeply submerged in water; as for aquaculture, it is not affected.
