These days, teachers and students of class 8A, Ly Nhat Quang Secondary School are very happy with the achievements they have achieved. At the 2019 Hanoi Open Math Competition in English, 3 students in the class including: Truong Cong Canh, Dang Huu Khanh, Nguyen Phuong Uyen all excellently won Silver Medals.
To win the prize in this competition, not only do you have a special love for Math and English, you also have to practice hard and strive tirelessly throughout the journey.
“I was very nervous about taking the exam in a large arena with many excellent students from many countries. So I asked seniors who had taken the exam in previous courses for advice and extra tutoring, then went to international websites to find solutions to previous exam questions.”

This is the 16th time the competition has been held with the participation of the Vietnamese delegation and 13 other countries. In the Junior team for 8th and 9th graders, the Nghe An delegation won 6 medals including 5 Silver medals and 1 Bronze medal. Of which, 3 students are from Ly Nhat Quang Secondary School and 3 students are from Dang Thai Mai Secondary School. In addition, in the team competition, 2 students Truong Cong Canh and Dang Huu Khanh and 2 students from Dang Thai Mai Secondary School also won third prize.
Three students Truong Cong Canh, Dang Huu Khanh, Nguyen Phuong Uyen are the core students selected by Ly Nhat Quang Secondary School through 6 exams. What is admirable is that all three students come from farming families, of which 2 are from near-poor households.
Dang Huu Khanh's family situation is very difficult, his father lost his ability to work, had to move and travel by wheelchair, his mother alone worked in the fields, raising two sisters to study. Phuong Uyen is the "Math tree" of the school but because her family is poor, her parents did not always prioritize her studies. Therefore, to access Math textbooks in English for Phuong Uyen is a great effort.
“I encountered many difficulties when translating Vietnamese Mathematical terminology into English, because in reality, if I use Vietnamese, I will be sure of the rigor of the solution, but if I use English, I am a bit hesitant. Therefore, to get high scores, it is necessary to update standard English terminology to ensure correctness and rigor… That process is very difficult for me.”

All three students are strong in Math and have good English knowledge. After 6 selection rounds, the school has arranged extra training and study schedules for them to get good exam results.
In addition, teachers also play a very important role in enriching students' knowledge. Teachers of Math and English must combine well, and at the same time learn new types of exam questions to practice.
“To get good results, first of all we had to spend a lot of time updating the types of questions. At the same time, we had to coordinate well with English teachers to create questions for students to practice."
