(Baonghean.vn) - Born without knowing her father, her mother left when she was still a baby, for the past 18 years, Nguyen Thi Minh, in Quynh Phuong ward (Hoang Mai town)- freshman of Hanoi National Universitygrew up with love and protection of grandmother.

Following a small, rocky alley, we found Nguyen Thi Minh’s family in Than Ai block, Quynh Phuong ward, Hoang Mai town when the sun was at its zenith. Asking about Minh, everyone in this coastal village knows about the orphaned student but with great determination to overcome difficulties.

In a low, level-four house with no valuable furniture, Minh and his grandmother were sitting meticulously repairing a crab net for the people in the coastal village before going to Hanoi to complete the admission procedures. Although it was called a house, the room was only about 15 square meters wide, and was both a place to receive guests and a place for the two of them to put a bed.

Mrs. Hoang Thi Dinh (60 years old), told about the unfortunate childhood of her granddaughter: Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung - her daughter who died when she was only 15 years old. Minh was born without knowing who his father was. Also because of poverty, Ms. Nhung left her child who was still crying for milk to her grandparents from then until now. Pitying her grandchild for lacking the warmth of parents since birth, her grandparents had to work hard to earn money, doing whatever they were hired to do to feed their little grandchild. Having lacked breast milk since birth, Minh is over 18 years old but is small, thin and looks like a middle school student.

When Minh was 10 years old, his grandfather suddenly passed away after a serious illness. This was also the most difficult time for the two of them because Mrs. Dinh had to take care of daily life and work as a hired hand, drying fish, weaving nets, cracking oysters, raking clams, etc. to earn money to send her grandchild to school. Also because of the hard work, in recent years Mrs. Dinh suffered from many illnesses and her health declined.

To Minh, his grandmother is both a mother and a father, taking care of every sleep and meal. Although the life of the two of them is still full of hardships, Minh is still determined to go to school. During 12 years of studying, his friends and teachers rarely saw Minh absent from school, rain or shine. Feeling sorry for his grandmother's hard work, Minh is very obedient, diligent and independent early. In addition to studying in class, whenever he comes home, Minh helps his grandmother with housework and weaving fishing nets for hire.

In response to her grandmother's expectations, Minh was an excellent student at school and town for many years. The day she learned that she had passed the entrance exam to the Faculty of Business Law, Hanoi National University, her joy was not enough to dispel the anxiety of the 18-year-old student. Minh secretly hid her report card, not letting her grandmother know.

Seeing her grandson coming home sad and not eating anything, Mrs. Dinh asked Minh and he burst into tears: “I passed the university entrance exam, grandma, but I will probably have to drop out of school because where will you get the money to feed me and send me to school…!”. The two of them hugged each other and cried.

Knowing that Minh had passed the university entrance exam but was unable to complete the admission procedures, the neighbors came to encourage and support Minh to continue his studies. Not letting down everyone's heart, Minh completed the admission procedures in Hanoi and said that when his studies were stable, he would find a part-time job to cover his tuition fees.

"After graduating from school, I hope to find a job so that I can take care of myself and my grandmother. No matter how difficult it is, I will not give up because I believe that if I have dreams, ambitions and try to persevere on the path I have chosen, all obstacles can be overcome. Only through education can I escape poverty," Minh confided.

Mr. Do Van Binh - homeroom teacher of class 12A2, Hoang Mai High School, Nghe An shared: "Minh is a student with especially difficult circumstances at school, lacking the warmth of his parents since birth, living with his elderly grandmother, but in return, Minh is very obedient, studies well and is full of determination, loved by teachers and friends. Achieving the university entrance exam is the result of a period of hard work and dedication of Minh".
