(Baonghean.vn) - In the recent hot days, the vegetable growing area in Quynh Luu district still ensures to supply the market with dozens of tons every day. In particular, at this time, farmers are very excited because green onions are priced...

This year, determining that summer vegetable production will face many difficulties, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong's family in Quynh Luong commune proactively converted some tomato acreage to grow green onions.

Ms. Huong said that spring onions are very drought-resistant, and only need to be watered 2-3 times a day to provide enough moisture for the plants to grow. Because they are drought-resistant, this year the family no longer grows tomatoes but instead grows 3 sao of spring onions, and is currently focusing on harvesting the remaining 1 sao. The purchase price is high, so the income is stable.

According to vegetable growers, green onions are a native variety with thick leaves, large stems, a spicy, aromatic flavor, and are popular in both domestic and foreign markets. Onions are a short-term crop, and in favorable weather conditions, they can be harvested about 50 days after planting and care.

Scallions are an easy-to-grow vegetable with a quick rotation and crop rotation time. On average, people can grow 3-4 crops per year. If well cared for, each sao can yield 1.5 tons of onions. With the current purchase price of 10,000 - 11,000 VND/kg, onion growers can earn 30-40 million VND/sao/year.

“Normally priced at 5,000-7,000 VND/kg, at this time, scallions are purchased by traders at the field for over 10,000 VND/kg. With this price, scallions growers are starting to make a profit. This is a high income compared to some other crops,” said Ms. Ho Thi Nam, a vegetable grower in Quynh Minh commune.

In this summer crop, people in the coastal areas of Quynh Luu district specialize in growing about 500-600 hectares of various vegetables, of which about 70% are green onions. At this time, dozens of hectares of green onions are in harvest season. To avoid the sun, people go to the fields in the middle of the night or cover them with tarps to work through noon to harvest in time and sell at high prices.

After cleaning, the onions are bundled, and traders will come to the fields to buy and transport them to wholesale markets or the southern market for consumption, while the rest is supplied to wholesale markets and local markets. In addition, many types of vegetables also have stable prices, such as tomatoes at 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg; peanuts at 14,000 VND/kg (an increase of 3,000 VND/kg compared to previous years); however, the prices of vegetables such as lettuce and Chinese cabbage have not increased....

Ms. Vu Thi Bich Hang - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district said: According to statistics from communes specializing in vegetable growing in the district, despite the hot weather, farmers still stick to the fields to produce vegetables. Every day, Quynh Luu vegetable area supplies the market with dozens of tons of various types. The district directs agricultural cooperatives and agricultural officers to increase their adherence to the fields to guide people in caring for and preventing pests and diseases, especially taking measures to prevent heat and cool vegetables so that they can grow normally.
