(Baonghean) - Shrimp farming in the third crop faces many difficulties and challenges due to low temperatures in the last months of the year. However, if the technique is successfully applied, shrimp farming areas in the third crop can be harvested in time for the Lunar New Year. With accumulated experience, shrimp farmers in Nghe An are expecting a high yield harvest in more than a month.

These days, Mr. Nguyen Van Dong, Hamlet 6, Dien Trung Commune (Dien Chau) is busy taking care of three shrimp ponds for the third crop. He released the fry in October on an area of 1 hectare, with extensive farming, density of 120 fry/m2.

Usually, shrimp farmers do not want to raise the third crop because of the high risk, due to low temperatures and high risk of disease. However, due to stable output and high prices, for many years now, Mr. Dong has "bet" on the weather, investing in raising shrimp for the third crop. The weather in the early winter is quite favorable, if successful, this shrimp crop will provide the market with a large amount of commercial shrimp for the Lunar New Year.

Dien Trung is the locality with the most bold shrimp pond owners in Dien Chau district. It is known that the whole commune of Dien Trung has 20 hectares of shrimp for the third crop (accounting for 50% of the shrimp area for the third crop in the whole district). Of the 86 households that raise shrimp every year, 42 households are determined to follow this crop.

Mr. Le The Hieu - Head of the District's Agriculture Department said: This year, the whole Dien Chau district planted more than 35 hectares of shrimp in the third crop. Every year, the third crop of shrimp yields 3.5 tons/ha, the total output of the district reaches over 150 tons of shrimp. Although there are many risks and large capital expenditures, if the care procedures are followed correctly, the third crop of shrimp will yield high yield and value. Especially, harvesting and selling at the time near Tet is very expensive. Currently, the price of shrimp is 170,000 VND/kg (under 100 shrimp/kg) while the high price of main-season shrimp is only 130,000 VND/kg. Successful third-crop shrimp farmers often have large profits. That is the reason why many households are determined to do the third crop despite many difficulties in farming.

Due to the erratic weather this year, and the special characteristics of Hung Hoa commune (Vinh city) located downstream of Lam river, the third shrimp farming season was released earlier than previous years. Mr. Le Van Dung's family, Phong Khanh hamlet, Hung Hoa commune, has more than 10 years of experience in shrimp farming and said: "This year, my family released more than 400,000 third-crop shrimp in an area of 5,000 m2 of ponds. Because the economic efficiency of the previous two crops was not as expected, we are hoping that the third-crop shrimp will have favorable weather and good prices."

This year, according to the plan, Hung Hoa commune will raise 30 hectares of shrimp in the third crop (a 70% reduction in area compared to the main crop). Mr. Duong Xuan Tham - an agricultural officer of the commune said: "The erratic weather has affected shrimp farming in Hung Hoa commune. In the previous two crops, there were heavy rains, water overflowed the ponds, a significant amount of shrimp that were about to be harvested was washed away by the water, causing great damage to shrimp farming households. In this third crop, although the area has decreased, for those households that decide to raise shrimp, the locality encourages and supports them in terms of science and technology. Hopefully, this shrimp crop will have a good price to compensate for the damage to the farmers and meet market demand."

According to the Department of Aquaculture, this year the whole province has 150 hectares of ponds invested by people in raising shrimp for the third crop in Dien Chau, Vinh City, Quynh Luu, Hoang Mai Town. It is estimated that the output of shrimp for the third crop in the whole province this year will reach 450 - 500 tons. The mastery of techniques and application of scientific advances in shrimp farming for the third crop are being accumulated by the farming households themselves every year. During the process of raising shrimp for the third crop, the farming households also receive technical support from the sectors and localities, thereby improving economic efficiency.
