(Baonghean.vn) - Since ancient times, Dang Son commune (Do Luong) has been known for its mulberry growing, silkworm raising, silk reeling, and spinning. Once upon a time, the vast fields along the Lam River through the commune were green mulberry fields; however, over time, the craft village has gradually shrunk. Although not as bustling as before, when visiting Dang Son today, visitors are still amazed by the shimmering golden silkworm patches and learn about the traditional "standing-up rice-eating profession" here.

In Dang Son commune, there are currently about 40 households growing mulberry and raising silkworms and about 6 households working in silk reeling. This is not an idle job, because the silkworms eat every 3 hours. Therefore, the silkworm farming profession is also jokingly called "the profession of eating standing up", because no matter what you do, you have to feed the silkworms at the right time, so that the silkworms can mature early and achieve high productivity. Here, households often raise two types of silkworms: white silkworms and yellow silkworms. White silkworms are raised to produce cocoons and silk, and yellow silkworms are raised for food. Silkworms are very sensitive to sunlight and pesticides, so silkworms are often raised in separate rooms with curtains to ensure temperature. Photo: Hai Vuong

When the silkworms are making cocoons, the breeder must watch for gentle sunlight so that the cocoons are dry and fragrant, so that when the silk is spun, the cocoons do not dissolve, and the silk threads are golden. Photo: Le Thang

Silkworms raised for cocooning and silk extraction must go through many complicated stages. In the past, silk reeling was done manually, but recently, machines have been used to help, making it less difficult for people. Photo: Hai Vuong

Currently, she works 8 hours a day, earning about 150,000 VND/day, although not high but stable because the job is year-round. Photo: Hai Vuong
From the time the silkworms spin silk until it is woven into fabric, it must go through many stages: reeling, collecting silk, importing silk, reeling, winding, looming… then connecting the loom, then weaving. In Dang Son, silk is rolled into silk bars or silk tubes. Photo: Hai Vuong
