Harris and Trump's views on key issues
Vice President Harris and former President Trump have deeply opposing views on key issues facing America.
Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, faces former President Donald Trump, a Republican, in a 2024 US presidential election that could be decided by a razor-thin margin in seven battleground states. The two candidates have deeply opposing views on America's role in the world and on domestic issues ranging from abortion rights to immigration and trade.

FOREIGN POLICY
About Ukraine:Vice President Harrisadvocated for continued US aid to Ukraine in the Russia conflict. As vice president, she helped President Joe Biden rally European allies to support Ukraine, including imposing sanctions on Russian exports and individuals and entities. Harris has met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky seven times. She called suggestions that Ukraine give up territory to secure peace a “surrender proposal.”
Former President Donald Trumphas called for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, a stance that suggests parts of Ukraine could eventually fall under Russian control. Mr. Trump has said he will not provide further aid to Ukraine and opposes legislation to do so in Congress. He has said he could end the conflict within 24 hours, although he has not said how.
About Israel: Vice President HarrisHarris, like President Joe Biden, has offered unwavering support for Israel’s right to self-defense since the October 7, 2023, Hamas offensive. But she has become increasingly critical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for failing to protect Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Harris has expressed more sympathy for the Palestinian people, but has not signaled any significant changes in Biden administration policy.
Former President Donald Trumpis a staunch supporter of Israel. As president, he moved the US embassy to Jerusalem and sidelined the Palestinians in a series of peace deals between Arab countries and Israel. Mr. Trump has backed Israel in its fight against Hamas in Gaza, but has also said the conflict should end quickly.
About NATO,Vice President Harrisis part of a US administration that has worked to strengthen the NATO alliance and led its expansion to counter Russia. Like President Joe Biden, she supports defense cooperation as the “backbone” of the alliance, while criticizing Mr. Trump for inviting Russia to attack allies who do not pay their fair share of NATO.
Former President Trump saying that NATO is a burden on US resources, he threatened to withdraw troops and demanded that Europe reimburse the US for nearly $200 billion in ammunition sent to Ukraine.
About China:Vice President Harrishas spent much of her tenure as vice president cultivating relationships in Asia, forging alliances to counter China’s rise. She is expected to continue President Joe Biden’s approach of trying to ease relations between the US and China, while also cutting exports of US-made chips to the Chinese market.
Former President Trumphas vowed to raise tariffs on imports from China, potentially sparking a new trade war. He seeks to ban Chinese companies from owning US real estate and infrastructure in the energy and technology sectors.

MIGRATION
Vice President Harriscalled for an “orderly and humane path to citizenship for hardworking people” in an event aired on Univision in October. Harris supports a bipartisan Senate bill that would provide additional funding for border security, immigration judges and U.S. asylum officers.
Former President Trumpbuilt or upgraded 450 miles of wall along the US-Mexico border during his presidency. He wants to arrest all immigrants who enter the country illegally or violate other immigration laws. Mr. Trump has promised to launch the largest deportation effort in US history and will deploy the National Guard and, if necessary, the active duty military. He wants to end automatic citizenship for children born to immigrants living in the US illegally.
RIGHT TO ABORTION
Vice President Harrishas pledged to sign legislation codifying access to safe abortion, after the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022 overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized the procedure nationwide. Without enough votes in Congress to support such legislation, she has said she supports ending a process that requires a supermajority in the Senate to pass legislation.
Former President Trumpappointed three conservative justices in the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 abortion ruling, which ended a woman’s constitutional right to abortion and allowed individual states to set their own abortion restrictions.

ECONOMY AND TAXES
Vice President Harriswants to raise tax rates on American households earning more than $400,000 a year, but extend Mr. Trump’s 2017 tax cuts below that threshold, when they expire in 2025. She wants to increase the Child Tax Credit to $3,600 per child a year with a $6,000 bonus for newborns, eliminate the tip tax and provide a $25,000 credit for first-time homebuyers.
Former President Trumpwants to keep all 2017 individual tax rates in place, saying they boosted U.S. growth before the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Trump has pledged to eliminate taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security benefits.
RACE IN AMERICA
Vice President Harrishas said that white supremacy fueled the 2019 mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, that left 23 people dead. She has accused Trump of trying to divide Americans over race and has often referenced his false claims that Barack Obama, the first black president of the United States, was not born in the United States.
Former President TrumpTrump’s campaign often emphasized white resentment of the perceived threat posed by racial minorities and illegal immigrants. Trump has called illegal immigrants violent criminals, and promoted false claims that Haitian immigrants were stealing livestock for food in an Ohio city. Trump has said his economic policies helped racial minorities during his first administration and would continue to do so if he is re-elected.
