Surprising truths about the richest countries in the world

According to an Oxfam report, the US, China, Japan, Germany, France and the UK only take in about 2.1 million refugees, less than 9% of the global refugee population.

Meanwhile, poorer countries bear most of the burden. The charity’s report, released on July 18, found that the six countries account for 56.6% of global GDP but host only 8.9% of the world’s refugees.

Of the 2.1 million refugees, Germany took in about a third, or 736,740, with the remaining 1.4 million split between the other five countries. The UK took in 168,937, a shameful figure, said Oxfam chief executive Mark Goldring.

In contrast, more than half of the world's refugees, nearly 12 million, live in Jordan, Türkiye, Palestine, Pakistan, Lebanon and South Africa, even though these countries account for less than 2% of the world's economy.

Oxfam is calling on these countries to take in more refugees and to do more to help poorer countries, which are providing shelter to the majority of refugees around the world.

“It is one of the greatest challenges facing poorer countries in our time, which are shouldering the brunt of the responsibility,” said Mark Goldring. “It is a complex crisis that requires a coordinated, global response, with the richest countries taking in more refugees and doing more to help and protect refugees wherever they are.”

According to the 2015 Global Trends Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, more than 65 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to violence, war and human rights violations. This is the highest number since the collection of information on refugees began.

Currently, Türkiye and Jordan are the two countries that receive the most refugees in the world.
