(Baonghean.vn) - That was the direction of comrade Pham Binh Minh - Politburo member, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee at the national online conference to review traffic safety work in the first 6 months of the year and directions and tasks for the last 6 months of 2022, which took place on the afternoon of July 15.

5,703 traffic accidents occurred in 6 months

According to the assessment at the conference, in the first 6 months of 2022, despite the pressure of increased traffic volume (due to the Covid-19 epidemic being controlled) and many peak periods such as New Year's holidays, Lunar New Year, April 30 and May 1, with the drastic direction of the Government and the active participation of ministries, branches and localities, the traffic safety situation nationwide was basically ensured, the number of cases and the number of people injured by traffic accidents continued to decrease sharply compared to the same period in 2021.

Nationwide, there were 5,703 traffic accidents, killing 3,314 people and injuring 3,690 people. Compared to the same period in 2021, the number of traffic accidents decreased by 663 cases (10.41%), increased by 79 deaths (2.44%), and decreased by 793 injuries (17.69%).

Nationwide, 30 provinces and centrally-run cities have seen a decrease in the number of deaths from traffic accidents compared to the same period in 2021, of which 10 localities had a decrease of over 20%.

In Nghe An province, in the first 6 months of 2022, there were 94 traffic accidents, killing 64 people and injuring 62 people. Compared to the same period in 2021, the number of accidents did not increase or decrease, the number of deaths decreased by 6 people (8.5%), the number of injuries decreased by 2 people (3.1%).

Traffic police nationwide have handled nearly 1.4 million cases of traffic safety violations, fined nearly 1,635 billion VND; revoked more than 144,000 driving licenses, certificates, and professional certificates, and detained nearly 242,000 vehicles of all kinds.

The Transport Inspectorate has conducted nearly 46,000 inspections and checks; sanctioned over 26,000 administrative violations, with fines totaling over VND169.7 billion; detained 173 cars; suspended the operation of 23 inland waterway ports and 117 inland waterway vehicles; supervised 720 car driving tests and 637 motorbike driving tests.

Target to reduce traffic accidents on all 3 criteria

At the conference, ministries, departments, branches and localities reported on traffic safety work and proposed solutions for traffic safety work in the coming time.

Concluding the conference, Comrade Pham Binh Minh - Politburo member, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee acknowledged the efforts and responsibilities of ministries, branches and localities in coordinating to ensure traffic safety in the first 6 months of the year.

However, there are still many particularly serious traffic accidents occurring on roads and waterways, killing many people.

The Deputy Prime Minister requested ministries, branches and localities to continue to resolutely implement a number of key tasks in the Traffic Safety Year 2022 with the theme "Building a safe traffic culture associated with effective control of the Covid-19 epidemic" with the goal of reducing traffic accidents in all three criteria of number of cases, number of deaths and number of injuries by at least 5% compared to 2021.

Accordingly, the functional forces, especially the Traffic Police, continue to effectively implement the plan to patrol, control, and handle violations on the topics of drugs, alcohol concentration, overloaded cargo, oversized cargo, speeding, unauthorized vehicle modifications on roads, handling of watercraft carrying more than the safe waterline, unlicensed inland ports and wharves, etc.

Launch a peak period to ensure traffic safety during the National Day holiday on September 2 and the 2023 New Year holiday. Review and evaluate the current status of complex traffic routes, promptly overcome unreasonable traffic organization, and resolve "black spots" and potential traffic accident risks.

The transport sector, in addition to improving the effectiveness of State management in the field of training, testing and granting driving licenses, and directing the tightening of management of vehicle registration, needs to ensure the progress and quality of key transport projects, maintenance and repair plans for transport infrastructure; organize warnings, regulate and ensure safety of inland waterway traffic during the rainy and flood season...
