Thanh Chuong is an ancient land, with a long history. According to archaeologists, more than twenty thousand years ago, at Doi Rang and Doi Dung, there were primitive Vietnamese people, belonging to the Son Vi culture, living.

This land was once called Ham Hoan, then Cuu Duc, then Tho Du. During the Le So Dynasty, Dai Viet was peaceful and prosperous; in 1469, King Le Thanh Tong re-determined the map of the whole country, naming the district Thanh Chuong.

According to the genealogy of the clans, from the 11th and 12th centuries onwards, there were many large-scale migrations from the North to the South to expand the territory, or due to chaos, war, or to find a way to make a living. "Birds of a feather flock together", Lam Giang valley became a place where groups of people, including scholars, noble families, and those who had lost their fortunes, waiting for the right time,... they united into a community, fought against natural disasters, war, and survived the test of time, regardless of the rain and wind.

Nature is not generous in bestowing available resources; but it has left behind river shapes and mountain forms, both nurturing and challenging, enough for people to nurture heavy duty and strong will. “The land borders three dangerous rivers/ Mountains shaped like thousands of galloping horses”,… Giang River, Trai River, Ro River, Gang River blend together and intertwine with Lam Giang; Thien Nhan, Dai Can, Thap But, Giang Man, Kim Nghe, Phuong Hoang, Ngoc Mountain,… have gone down in history with poetry, songs, music, and paintings.

The "four obstacles" of the terrain, the harshness of the climate, and the constant wars,... have forged and crystallized a community of people with special qualities, imbued with the "Nghe character - brand": "Idealistic in soul - Loyal in nature - Austere in life - Tough in communication",...

For more than half a millennium, with many ups and downs, Thanh Chuong land and people have remained steadfast and courageous, and have always made worthy contributions to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland and reviving the country.

We are proud: Since the 15th century, "Ky Dong, Than Bach Ma" Phan Da with thousands of militiamen helped Le Loi's army win many resounding battles, making the Ming army terrified and scared. When he passed away, he responded to help the people from natural disasters and epidemics, and helped the kings defeat the enemy. Bach Ma Temple became one of the four sacred animals of Nghe An.

We are proud of: Doctor Dinh Bo Cuong, from an honest and strict District Chief, was selected by King Le Thanh Tong himself to become the Minister of Justice. When he retired, he reclaimed the right-bank communes of Cat Ngan commune, teaching people to "bring water to the fields" to fight drought. In particular, he had a vision across the centuries: 500 years ago, with the method of "using agriculture to nurture Confucianism" - using agriculture to nurture learning, he had a lasting influence on the "learning" of the land and people of Thanh Chuong.

We are proud that in the mid-15th century, during the Le - Trinh period, Do Ba Cong Dao, a native of Thanh Mai, was a well-traveled and knowledgeable person. He resigned from his position, followed a merchant ship to the sea, and drew maps. He was the author of the precious book Tu Lo Chi Do, which includes the precious maps of Truong Sa and Hoang Sa that have been passed down to this day.

We are proud: In 1874, when the Hue Court signed the Giap Tuat Treaty with France, an uprising broke out in Thanh Chuong by the students of Bachelor Tran Tan - Dang Nhu Mai. Although it failed, this was a typical event of noble national spirit, for national sovereignty and left valuable lessons for the future struggle for national independence and freedom.

We are proud: In the early 19th century, in Vo Liet, there was Dr. Phan Si Thuc, who was both talented, virtuous, and honest. Even after retirement, he was still kept. When he became an official, he always remembered his father's advice: "You must make the people trust and love you, don't make them fear or resent you" - "After being an official for more than 40 years, he still lived honestly in a thatched house with mud walls, his rice jar was always empty, but he was still calm".

We are proud: Since the dawn of the Party, on September 1, 1930, in Thanh Chuong, there was an "unprecedentedly fierce demonstration in Annam". Under the leadership of the Party, 20,000 peasants rose up together, destroyed the feudal district office, and established the first Soviet government in the country. History once recorded: "Compared to the movement in the whole province, the Soviets in Thanh Chuong were at the forefront in all three aspects: content of activities, form of struggle, and duration of existence".

These cells directly led the movement to fight against the tyrants and French colonialists during the Soviet - Nghe Tinh high tide and the struggle to seize power in 1945. Photo: Nguyen Lam Son

We are proud: Through the resistance wars to defend the country, Thanh Chuong was a resilient land in combat, a loyal and steadfast rear base for the revolution. "Not a pound of rice was missing, not a soldier was missing", "Even though we had to fill up Rao Gang and level Ru Nguoc, we still ensured our vehicles could reach the front line", "The vehicles had not passed, but the house was not spared", is a heroic symbol of a time of fighting the Americans. The district and 12 communes were honored by the Party and State with the title of Heroic Unit of the People's Armed Forces.

We are proud: The "spiritual land" has given birth to many "talents". This land has given birth to and nurtured outstanding celebrities such as Phan Nhan Tuong, Nguyen Tien Tai, Nguyen Lam Thai, Nguyen The Binh, Nguyen Dinh Con, Pham Kinh Vi, Dinh Nhat Than, Nguyen Si Sach, Dang Thai Mai, Dang Thuc Hua, Ton Quang Phiet, Nguyen Con, Vo Quy Huan, Vo Thuc Dong, Nguyen Duy Quy, Hoang Dinh Cau, Nguyen Tai Can, Nguyen Tai Tue, Tran Dinh Huou, Nguyen De, Dang Dinh Ho, ... and many, many patriotic intellectuals, politicians, scientists, generals, artists, famous businessmen, ... Each character is a golden page in the eternal chronicle of the homeland, the country...

We are proud of the place names Bai Tran, Hoa Quan, Binh Ngo citadel, Ba Nghe wharf, ... proud of the names of the land, the village names Dao Ngan, Cao Mon, Tho Son, Hanh Lam, Lai Nha, Chi Ne, Vo Liet, Quang Xa, Bich Thi, Luong Dien, Tu Vien, Nguyet Bong, Dai Dinh, Tien Hoi, Cam Thai, ... each place name is anchored with historical events that transcend space, live forever with time, forever the pride of the land and people of Thanh Chuong.

Along with the general development, Thanh Chuong today has had great changes. The economy has grown quite well, the structure has shifted in the right direction, the poverty rate has decreased sharply to 3.2%; from a "four-block" district, now there are 6 national highways passing through the area, 36 ferry piers have been replaced by bridges connecting the happy shores; 29 communes have met the new rural standards, 4 advanced new rural communes, Thanh Linh commune has achieved the model new rural standard; Thanh Chuong town has met the civilized urban standards; social culture has developed healthily, education is still a solid foundation for Thanh Chuong people to move forward; national defense and security have been maintained; the work of building the Party and building the political system has been well implemented, truly "Unanimously above and below - Consistently across and above - Supported by the front and the back - Responding to one call, all respond" as wished by the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

But with humility, openness, and serious recognition, we still have many shortcomings, limitations, difficulties, and challenges. To be worthy of the glorious history of the nation, of the homeland, and of our ancestors, we cannot be satisfied or half-hearted. We must unite, work together, and strive to build our homeland to be increasingly rich, beautiful, and civilized.

Standing in the middle of our homeland on the Great Day, we respectfully express our infinite gratitude to our predecessors who have contributed to the opening, preservation, and development of both material and spiritual matters. We respectfully remember and are infinitely grateful to the great President Ho Chi Minh, our revolutionary predecessors, heroic martyrs, Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, war invalids, sick soldiers, families with meritorious services to the country, and generations of Vietnamese people who have worked for the longevity and prosperity of the Fatherland.

General Vo Nguyen Giap once wrote: “The past was the present. The present will become the past. That is the movement of time, of history. Understanding this, we will be responsible for time, and also responsible for history”. Countless wisdom, sweat, and blood of our ancestors have been poured into each field, each dike, each road, each corner of the market so that Thanh Chuong can be what it is today. For hundreds of years, “blocking storms in the morning, blocking the sun and fire in the afternoon”, from generation to generation, how many days have our people had a day of rest? Generation after generation has been resilient, fighting, dedicating their whole lives to their homeland to protect every inch of land of their ancestors.

In the coming years, we will have new opportunities and advantages. Resolution 39 of the Politburo "on the construction and development of Nghe An province to 2030, with a vision to 2045" with specific policies and mechanisms has been approved by the National Assembly. The Vientiane - Hanoi expressway from Thanh Thuy border gate to Vinh city connecting with the North - South expressway will be given priority for investment. After many terms of investment and construction, infrastructure has become increasingly synchronous.

The district has abundant human resources, large forest areas, and potential for developing eco-tourism closely linked to the Ho Chi Minh Road economic corridor; reviving cultural sediments and dense historical relics to move forward. The Party Committee, government and people of Thanh Chuong will continue to stand side by side, with fundamental and specific solutions to build the homeland to develop more and more sustainably.

Announcing 555 titles of Thanh Chuong, celebrating the 94th anniversary of the tradition of the Party Committee and people of the district is an opportunity for us to continue affirming the noble qualities and fine traditions of the people and land of Thanh Chuong. That is the priceless heritage left by our ancestors. We respectfully express our gratitude, have the responsibility to preserve, pass it on to future generations and promote it to a new height in the period of integration and development.
