Prime Minister requests to increase vaccination and control new Omicron strain

The Government Office has just issued Official Dispatch No. 9406/CD-VPCP dated December 23, 2021 conveying the direction of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on strengthening vaccination and controlling the new Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The Prime Minister requested to increase vaccination and control the new Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The telegram sent to Ministers of Ministries, ministerial-level agencies, Government agencies; Heads of Steering Committees for COVID-19 Prevention and Control of provinces and centrally run cities; Chairmen of People's Committees of provinces and centrally run cities clearly stated:

In recent times,COVID-19 pandemicis having complicated developments; in many localities the number of new cases tends to increase; the number of severe patients and deaths in some localities has not decreased. In order to continue to effectively implement the work of preventing and fighting the COVID-19 epidemic, especially proactively controlling the new Omicron variant which is developing very unpredictably, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested:

1. The Head of the Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, the Chairman of the People's Committee of the provinces and centrally-run cities shall direct and organize the vaccination of COVID-19 vaccines at a faster pace. By December 31, 2021 at the latest, the second injection must be completed for people aged 18 and over (except in cases of contraindications); no cases that require vaccination must be left out, especially people with underlying diseases and people over 50 years old; the second injection must be completed for people aged 12 to 18 in January 2022, and the third injection must be completed for people aged 18 and over in the first quarter of 2022.

- The Head of the Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control and the Chairmen of the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities are responsible to the Government and the Prime Minister for the vaccination progress in their localities when they have been fully supplied with vaccines.

2. Ministry of Health: Responsible to the Government and the Prime Minister for ensuring sufficient vaccines and timely distribution to localities, guiding localities to vaccinate safely, scientifically, reasonably and effectively. Strictly inspect and control, and combat all negative manifestations.

3. The Ministries of Health, Transport, Public Security, National Defense, and Foreign Affairs, according to their assigned functions and tasks, shall strengthen control of people coming to and passing through countries where cases of the new Omicron strain have been detected entering Vietnam, including by air, road, and waterway to prevent the risk of infiltration and spread of this variant into our country; conduct rapid tests on passengers before boarding and after disembarking from the plane, immediately quarantine suspected cases; conduct gene sequencing to detect the Omicron strain and thoroughly handle it.

4. The Ministry of Health directs specialized agencies to conduct comprehensive research on the new Omicron strain to promptly take appropriate epidemic prevention and control measures.
