Hung Nguyen corrugated iron boats sell well after storm number 2

(Baonghean.vn) - The flood and storm season is approaching, many households working in the corrugated iron industry in Hung Nguyen are busy making corrugated iron boats to supply people in flooded areas. Especially after storm No. 2 made landfall and caused heavy damage, this product is consumed more strongly.

Along Pham Hong Thai Street (Vinh City) towards Hung Thinh and Hung Chau Communes (Hung Nguyen), it is not difficult to recognize the bustling sound of people hammering and welding on corrugated iron sheets. Among the household products produced here, corrugated iron boats are currently the main product, produced in the largest quantities.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ha in Hamlet 4, Hung Thinh Commune has more than 20 years of experience making corrugated iron boats. During the rainy season, her family hires more workers to meet the production schedule for pre-ordered orders.

"Corrugated iron boats are produced all year round for people to fish and harvest rice, especially during the peak of the rainy and stormy season in August every year. During this time, workers are constantly busy; on average, my family produces about 300 boats per year," Ms. Ha shared.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Quang in Hung Nhan commune, people in the commune face floods all year round because it is located outside the Ta Lam dike, boats are indispensable items, but currently the locality does not have a facility to produce corrugated iron boats, so they mainly use rudimentary and unsafe ones. Therefore, during the rainy season, people in the flood-affected areas flock to Hung Thinh commune to buy corrugated iron boats.

Around August and September, corrugated iron boats are in high demand; currently, the price of small corrugated iron boats ranges from 400,000 to 700,000 VND/boat. Large custom-made boats cost from 3 to 4 million VND/boat.

It takes an average of half a day to complete a corrugated iron boat, a skilled worker can produce 3 boats/day, large boats can take up to 2-3 days; average income is 5-7 million VND/person/month.

Mr. Hoang Than - a long-time corrugated iron boat maker in Go hamlet, Hung Thinh said: Currently, up to 60% of corrugated iron boat products at Hung Thinh are made to order, with stable product output. This year, the weather has been erratic, after storm No. 2 many people called and placed orders."

Not only do they make corrugated iron boats to order, many households also offer boat making services to help people. Many people buy corrugated iron and ask workers to make boats for a fee of 150,000 VND/boat.

Currently, Hung Thinh commune has more than 30 households engaged in the profession of welding corrugated iron. Corrugated iron boats here are not only consumed within the province but also exported to Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa provinces...
