According to the prosecution, on the morning of March 22, 2019, Hoa entered Vinh Nghiem Pagoda on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, to steal donation money.
However, when entering the main hall, Hoa discovered Mr. T.'s leather bag, left unattended at the foot of a stone pillar. Looking around, he quickly grabbed the bag, hid it in his shirt, and hurriedly ran out to get his motorbike and leave.
Because the bag had a code, Hoa had to cut open the bag and take inside 4.8 million Vietnamese Dong, 10,000 Japanese Yen, and a gold Vertu mobile phone (worth more than 484 million Dong). Having stolen a large amount of property, Hoa told his wife and then they both took the Japanese Yen to sell, but Hoa had not found a buyer for the expensive phone.
Upon receiving the victim’s report, the Criminal Police Department (Ho Chi Minh City Police) began investigating and quickly arrested Hoa. Hong was also implicated when she and her husband sold the stolen property. According to statistics, the total value of the property stolen by Hoa was up to 500 million VND.
