(Baonghean.vn) - After 3 months of producing safe vegetables according to VietGAP standards on 2 hectares of alluvial land, farmers in Hung Khanh commune, Hung Nguyen district have provided the market with many types of quality green vegetables.

The model of safe vegetable production according to VietGAP standards was supported by Nghe An Plant Protection and Cultivation Department and Hung Nguyen Plant Protection and Cultivation Station to be implemented in Hung Khanh commune with the participation of nearly 40 households. Participating in the model, households were guided on technical processes from land preparation, fertilization, planting and caring for vegetables according to VietGAP standards to minimize the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Ms. Vo Thi Ngu - a farmer in hamlet 2 of Hung Khanh commune said, "Participating in the model, we were instructed on how to prepare the soil, compost manure with lime to treat pests, how to mix fertilizers and only fertilize once at the beginning of the season. In addition, we were supported with seeds to sow."

Previously, on the Lam River alluvial land, Hung Khanh commune farmers only produced one crop of peanuts or spring corn each year. From June to January of the following year, the river alluvial land was abandoned as a grazing ground for cattle. In recent years, people have introduced some vegetables into winter crop production but have not yet found a suitable direction.

In the winter crop of 2016, thanks to the help of the provincial Department of Plant Protection and Cultivation, farmers planted vegetables such as cabbage, kohlrabi, potatoes, carrots, mustard greens, etc. on an area of 2 hectares. Thanks to technical training, all vegetables were strictly applied technical processes according to VietGAP standards. The soil was loosened, fertilized only once before planting and mainly composted manure with lime powder was used to treat pathogens. No pesticides were used, but insects were caught and weeded manually; clean water was used to create safe vegetable products.

With a selling price of 5,000 VND/cabbage, farmers can earn 10 million VND per sao after only 3 months of production. Although the season was late due to early season floods, the safe vegetable production model in Hung Khanh has initially created quality products to serve the consumption needs of local people and provide the market with a large amount of safe vegetables.

“We plan to expand the area to 5 hectares. This field has been supported by the district to invest in installing an electricity system, a pumping station, a pipeline system, and a water tank for irrigation to serve the production of clean vegetables. The issue we are concerned about is the output of the product because if it is sold freely on the market, it will be difficult for people who grow clean vegetables. Meanwhile, vegetables produced according to VietGAP standards cost more and require more labor,” Mr. Trinh Van Ngo - Head of Hung Khanh Agricultural Service Cooperative worried.

Currently, the District Plant Protection Station is promoting safe vegetable production to local people, advising the district to support people in producing vegetables that are closely linked to local consumption markets such as kindergartens, supermarkets, etc.
