It is known that the case in which An was the perpetrator of the murder and robbery of his friend took place at the end of February 2014 with horrifying details that caused a stir in public opinion.

According to the case file, An was close friends with Dat and studied in the same class as him at a technical school specializing in programming. In early 2014, while in a desperate situation due to the loss of his car and computer, An came up with the idea of poisoning his friend to rob him of his property.

On the night of February 26, 2014, An called Dat to come to his rented room on Cong Hoa Street, Ward 4, Tan Binh District to discuss the class schedule.

Here, An lamented his current difficult situation. While confiding, Dat told his close friend about his family having several billion dong in savings in the bank; greed arose in him, and a daring plan flashed through An's mind.

Due to insomnia, An kept a lot of sleeping pills in his rented room. When planning, An went out to buy a bottle of green tea, drank half of it, put 6 sedative pills in the remaining bottle, shook it vigorously to dissolve it and offered it to his friend to drink.

10 minutes after drinking half a bottle of water, Dat fell into a coma. An immediately tied Dat's legs behind his back and covered his body with two sacks. At midnight, An took the sack containing Dat, who was still alive, and threw it into the river, near Phu My bridge, district 7.

After that, An took Dat's motorbike and parked it in a parking lot on Thang Long Street, Tan Binh District. As for Dat's phone, An threw it into a ditch, only took the SIM card number and started using it to text and call Dat's family to blackmail them.

The next afternoon, An went to Dat's house to investigate the situation. Knowing that Dat's family had reported the matter to the police, from noon on February 27 to March 3, An texted and called Dat's mother to extort 500 million VND.

A few days later, Dat's body was discovered by locals. When the police cordoned off the area, they arrested An and cleared up the case.

In mid-2015, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court sentenced Nguyen Kim An to death for “Murder” and “Robbery”. More than 3 months later, at the appeal hearing, the High People’s Court in Ho Chi Minh City rejected An’s appeal and upheld the sentence.
