Having existed for a long time, the Nguyen Sy family church in Thanh Luong commune (Thanh Chuong district) is not only a relic associated with the name of Martyr Nguyen Sy Sach, but also a work of ancient beauty, elaborately sculpted and carved.

Next to the Nguyen Sy Sach Martyr Memorial House in Thanh Luong Commune, there is the Nguyen Sy family church built in 1852 to worship Nguyen Sy Chan, Nguyen Sy An (Nguyen Dynasty Deputy Minister) and their descendants. The church has a 1-room, 2-wing architecture. In 2006, it was renovated, but still retains the old architecture. Photo: Huy Thu

The church was built in the traditional style of four pillars, with beams overlapping, using ironwood. The wooden frame was carved with bamboo bark and elaborately carved. Two pillars hiding in the attic in the middle create a spacious space for the church. Photo: Huy Thu

Many wooden structures on the church are carved with traditional themes, such as flowers, phoenixes, carp, dragons... quite beautifully. The phoenix on the lower tail is carved in the position of spreading its wings and flying outward. Photo: Huy Thu

At the four corners of the church, right on the top of the columns, there are four dragon heads raising high, facing the middle. The wooden frame of the church was originally left untouched, but during the recent restoration, it was painted the color of maple. Photo: Huy Thu

On the roof rafters, the bows, the pedestals, the round and square wood... are carved with soft, graceful stylized flowers and leaves. The inscription on the two middle rafters is engraved with Chinese characters recording the time of creation and completion of the project (Year of the Rat - 1852). Photo: Huy Thu

The church has an ancient beauty with architecture and wood carvings of the Nguyen Dynasty, not dense in sculpture density or rich in themes, but leaning towards strong, solid features. Photo: Huy Thu

The two sides of the front lines of the church are carved with vivid themes of "four seasons", carp, lotus... Over a long period of time, due to various reasons, some wooden sculptures have been chipped, broken... Photo: Huy Thu

The church still preserves many ancient sacrificial objects such as large letters, parallel sentences, dragon thrones, Buddha statues... According to Mr. Nguyen Sy Thiem (94 years old) - the person who is looking after and taking care of the church, the church used to have royal decrees from the Nguyen Dynasty but they were lost and misplaced during the land reform. According to the stele erected in front of the church yard: The Nguyen Sy family church is not only a place to worship ancestors and descendants of the family, but also a place for patriotic scholars to meet and exchange, organize revolutionary activities in the years 1930 - 1931, where some artifacts such as parallel sentences and horizontal lacquered boards of Vice-Chancellor Nguyen Sinh Sac, patriot Phan Boi Chau, Doctor Nguyen Dinh Dien... are kept as gifts to the family. This is also the place where Uncle Ho visited during his childhood. The church, together with the Nguyen Sy Sach Martyr Memorial House, were recognized as National Historical Relics in 1998.
